Expect to see a big parade of boats through the Ship Canal and in Lake Union tomorrow: May 4th is the annual Opening Day parade for boaters.
Connie Grant posted the above photo in the My Ballard Group of boats lined up in the Locks. “They’re here!” she writes.
Opening Day festivities have been happening since 1913, according to the Seattle Yacht Club.
“When the Ballard Locks opened our waters into the Salish Sea in 1916 and the Montlake Cut opened Lake Washington to Lake Union in 1913, our boating world expanded and enriched our lives,” they write on their website.
The parade itself takes place through the Montlake Cut, but there will be plenty of boats arriving and departing via the Ballard Locks if you want an up-close view.

You want some fun, cost free entertainment? Go to the locks tomorrow and watch the madness ensue. Boats crashing into each other husbands and wives screaming at each other, cleats being ripped out of boats, cell phones in the drink, drunken morons that think they know it all and USACE trying not to laugh at them, oh it’s a scene man!
Been there, done that. I’ll just keep our boat tied up at the dock and relax.
