Another brewery is opening its doors this weekend in Ballard: Urban Family Brewing has moved across the Ship Canal from their home in Magnolia to a new spot, 1103 NW 52nd St.
Urban Family, set to open Friday, Feb. 21, has been operating in Magnolia for four years. “It was never really our intention to leave our current space, but we were given the opportunity to build a new brewery completely from scratch in Ballard, and we couldn’t pass it up,” the owners wrote on Facebook. “That said, we are still sad to leave our home.”
The new brewery and taproom is just across the street from Stoup, in the heart of the Ballard Brewing District. There used to be an old house on the property, which was torn down to make way for the new building, which adjoins to an existing warehouse on 51st St. The taproom is up front, while the magic happens in the older warehouse behind a glass roll-up door.
According to the Washington Beer Blog, the main taproom and patio are all-ages, while a large loft area upstairs is 21+. There’s a big bar in the main room with 18 taps, and a big screen on one wall — most likely to be used for screening all those important sports ball games.
The front patio will have picnic tables and gas fire pit, and, of course, food truck parking. The WBB notes that they’ve hard-wired electrical hookups so the trucks won’t have to run generators.
If they pass final inspections, Urban Family should be open for business on Friday. Their hours will be noon to 10pm daily.
As a sober guy for nearly 18 years, I wonder, do they have home made Sarsaparilla or root beer for me and the other sober folks?
They do, as do most breweries, have some non-alcoholic options. Some even make their own sodas.
