Ballard Food Bank sees dip in volunteers amid coronavirus precautions

Local food banks are experiencing volunteer shortages as coronavirus concerns are keeping people at home.

The Ballard Food Bank relies on a number of senior volunteers in the community, and many are taking the advice of health officials and avoiding public places.

Ballard Food Bank Executive Director Jen Muzia told KUOW that volunteers have been cancelling their weekly shifts out of concern for their health. She also said donations have been down, likely due to the public’s overstocking on food and supplies.

On Facebook, the food bank said they’re operating as usual, but are taking extra precautions in consideration of the virus. They advised that any clients who are feeling sick should avoid coming in, and are offering pre-packaged food available for pick-up at the front door.

“We are doing our best to keep all of our clients, volunteers, and staff healthy, so please help us with that as we work to get you some food,” they say.

The food bank could use a few extra volunteers and donations during this time, and have an Amazon wish list for ease of donating.

    1. Common sense went out the door years ago. Common sense is un-common these days. Group think however, is alive and doing quite well. Don’t eat the Tide-pods either.
