A Ballard artist has found a creative niche during the COVID-19 pandemic: she calls them Quarantine Postcards, designed to bring joy to people stuck at home.
Graphic designer/illustrator Katherine Dietz started making the postcards as a way to help support herself during the stay-home order. Much of her work is reliant on art shows and other events, so she’s had a downturn in her business, Hello June Prints, since the pandemic shutdown started.
“I’ve been feeling pretty sad and helpless about everything going on and how many people’s lives have been turned upside down,” Dietz tells My Ballard. “I’ve been trying to think about what I can do personally to try to help and I came up with the concept of creating postcards that I’m sending on behalf of the sender to limit turn around time and contacts.”
Her first postcard design was of several pairs of people encircled by a six-foot-long tape measure in the shape of a heart with the message, “Sending you a socially distanced hug and so much love.” The messages grew beyond that theme, and she now has several designs to help celebrate birthdays, honor healthcare workers, and most recently, Mother’s Day.
“My hope was that I could create something that would bring some joy and help people to feel connected and to know that someone was thinking about them, while also figuring out a way to pivot my business to keep working.”
