Massive two-story mural in the works for old Ballard Blossom building

The former Ballard Blossom building has become covered in graffiti, so the Ballard Alliance is organizing to have it wrapped in murals.

The Ballard Alliance and the Ballard Public Art Committee have partnered with Novo Painting and Property services and the property management of 1766 NW Market St for the mural project. They’re seeking four muralists to wrap the property on two sides, covering both the first and second floors of the building.

“By covering the currently vacant and tagged property with art, this project will transform the streetscape through art, enhance the pedestrian experience, promote community identity, and deter future graffiti,” the Ballard Public Art Committee says in their call for artists. “We understand that murals can help deter graffiti and reduce crime, if not just the perception of crime, and can help rally a community by bringing hope to those who encounter the murals.”

The mural will cover the south- and east-facing sides of the former Ballard Blossom site, painting the first and second floors, including some windows on the first floor facing NW Market St.

The Alliance plans to set up a GoFundMe to help crowdsource payment for the selected artists and disbursement will be made through the Ballard Public Art Committee.

The property will eventually become home to a seven-story hotel, and will be demolished in about three years.

“While any mural work will ultimately be temporal, we are excited about having a two-story mural-covered building right on Market Street for the next few years,” the Ballard Public Art Committee says.

  1. I’m glad there will be a mural on this eyesore, but I find it disturbing that there is a gofundme for this. Clearly the current owners of the building have plenty of money, so charge them. And also the city should fine them for neglect, and get some money off these greedy POS.

  2. Putting lipstick on a giant piggy; BRILLIANT. Perhaps this can continue on to giving out new tents and RV’s as well. We can wrap the RV’s inexpensively and feel real good about the wonderful advancements. New tents then can’t be far off. We wouldn’t want to send the wrong messages, would we. We DO want Seattle to become a 3rd world city after all; closing jails, youth detention, defunding police, allowing anarchy to run amok, losing parts of OUR city, and on and on. Hey mayor Jenny, R U even awake? People are finally beginning to vote where their feet take THEIR wallets. 1 out of 4 are freaking moving out.

    1. Well, the City Council is a bunch of wacko progressive d-bags and they were voted in so…. they are implementing their vision of equality, to the detriment of everyone. Crime up, homelessness up, property crime up, maniacs walking through Ballard up and so forth. You know, progress!

      1. Step one is to stop starting everyday watching the “Seattle is Dying” snuff film. Hell, you might even start having a positive outlook on life!

        Good luck!

        1. Weren’t you rolling around with the hobos at the Commons? And can I get my bike back?
PS – Don’t drink the lemonade from the yellow jug. It’s human urine.

    2. Im so sick of all the graffiti In Ballard why cant we catch these criminals they are defacing property all over and nothing is being done about it its a disgrace we are losing our neighborhood to these assholes and so much crime I often wonder why the city cannot get the homeless off the streets too it is just such a big problem and only getting worse

  3. Get the city council out since they won’t deal with any problems with any reason. They are making it worse. call 911 when you need someone and be on hold for 2 hours. Peachy. Everyone’s scrambling to get guns to protect themselves and what a state of mayhem!
