Sunset Hill Community Hall may become a protected landmark

The 95-year-old Sunset Hill Community Hall (3003 NW 66th St) might become a city landmark.

The Seattle Landmarks Preservation Board will consider the community center for landmark status on Feb. 5.

According to the landmark application, the Sunset Hill Improvement Club started in 1922 when a group of Ballard residents wanted the city to build a short line water pipe to the area. The members first met in homes, then at Webster School.

The group wanted a formal hall for their meetings, and purchased four lots totaling 10,000 square feet at the southwest corner of NW 66th Street and 30th Avenue NW for $800 in 1924. A group of women in the club—the Ladies Auxiliary—raised a major part of the funds from bazaars, dinners, luncheons, and parties. The rest of the funds came from local businesses advertising in a special issue of the Ballard Tribune published in June 1924 as the Sunset Hill News.

Construction started in 1928, and the hall was finished in 1929.

It’s still used as a community center today for gatherings like yoga, interactive theater, artist gatherings, and open mics.
