Pie Bar in Ballard has closed its doors.
In a note left on the door, they say they’ve been negatively impacted by the Seattle Department of Transportation’s (SDOT) recent construction work. Pie Bar Ballard is at 2218 NW Market St, right in the middle of the Route 40 improvement project.
“Due to the city of Seattle’s mismanaged street project, we’ve had to close this location,” the sign reads, directing customers to Pie Bar Phinney at 7402 Greenwood Ave N.

The Route 40 project is designed to improve transit for buses. Construction was focused on downtown Ballard on NW Market St and Leary Ave NW, with crews working on the sidewalks between summer and fall of 2024. SDOT has since finished the majority of its work in Ballard, and are moving their efforts to Fremont and Westlake for the remainder of the project.
In September, while SDOT was in the midst of construction on NW Market St, owner Natalie Bleifuss alluded to making some changes to Pie Bar Ballard. She wrote that she planned to shut down their restaurant service and instead operate as a commissary bakery, “to support and elevate talented women bakers in our community, providing them with the skills and platform to flourish as independent business owners.” We’ve reached out to Pie Bar to learn more about the commissary plans and will update you with any new information.
