Ballard Bridge to close this weekend for scheduled pavement restoration

The Ballard Bridge is scheduled to close this weekend for pavement restoration work—the first of several weekend closures planned for this spring and summer.

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) will fully close the Ballard Bridge starting Friday, April 25 at 7 p.m. through Monday, April 28 at 5 a.m. The closure is part of ongoing work on the 15th Ave W/NW & Ballard Bridge Paving & Safety Project.

In addition to the bridge shutdown, 15th Ave NW will be completely closed in both directions between NW 51st St and NW 50th St for concrete roadway repairs.

This is the first in a series of full weekend closures planned this spring to complete critical maintenance that was delayed due to rain last fall. SDOT says the goal is to extend the life of the bridge, improve safety, and ensure smoother travel for everyone who relies on this busy route between Ballard, Interbay, and downtown.

Weekend closure schedule

Here’s what to expect for this weekend’s work:

  • Friday, April 25
    • Lane closures begin at 7 p.m.
    • Full bridge closure starts at 10 p.m.
  • Monday, April 28
    • The bridge is expected to reopen by 5 a.m.

Future closures are also scheduled for the weekends of May 9–12, May 30–June 2, and June 6–9. SDOT may also tap into backup weekends later this summer if needed.

What to expect

Pedestrians & bicyclists

  • The sidewalk across the bridge will stay open, but cyclists may be asked to walk their bikes.
  • Depending on work zones, crews may redirect people to the opposite side of the bridge.

Drivers & freight

  • The Aurora Bridge (SR 99) will be the main detour route.
  • Avoid using the Fremont Bridge unless you’re heading to Fremont or Westlake.
  • Detour signs will be in place to guide drivers.

Bus riders

  • Expect reroutes and delays. Some buses will detour via the Fremont Bridge.
  • Temporary bus stop relocations may also pop up near the bridge.
  • For updates, check out King County Metro’s service advisories.

Boaters

  • Marine traffic will still be allowed through, but SDOT advises caution.

SDOT recommends considering alternate travel methods during closures.

SDOT will confirm each closure the week of and send out a final update on Fridays. To stay updated, sign up for SDOT email alerts and follow their blog for maps and more info.
