One of the neighborhood Little Free Libraries has been turned into a Little Free Food Pantry.
The sign on the pantry, located at 6526 17th Ave NW, says “Take what you need, leave what you can.
“No books for now please as we use this space to support our neighbors in need.” There’s also a little notebook where neighbors can make suggestions for items that would be helpful.

Little Free Food Pantries are one way that communities are responding to the recent hold on SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits. SNAP helps low-income households purchase food, and it’s been on pause due to the government shutdown.
Another local effort to support neighbors facing food scarcity is the Ballard Farmers Market campaign with FARmore WA, which is taking food and monetary donations.
