Community meeting set as opposition grows to Crown Hill Cemetery development

A community group opposing the Crown Hill Cemetery (8712 12th Ave NW) proposed development is hosting a public meeting this week as its efforts to block or modify the project continue.

The Save Crown Hill Cemetery group will meet Wednesday, March 25 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Greenwood Public Library, with a virtual attendance option available. According to organizers, the meeting will focus on next steps in their strategy, including legal planning, advocacy efforts, and newly identified evidence related to the site.

The group says it has identified sonography evidence indicating potential grave sites beneath the proposed development plots and is advocating for a formal State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA) review. Organizers also plan to share updates from a land use attorney and discuss upcoming outreach to city leaders.

The March 25 meeting comes as part of a broader campaign by neighbors and advocates to oppose a land use proposal at 8712 12th Ave NW. The project, identified as Project 3043275-LU, would subdivide one parcel into three lots and demolish existing buildings on the site.

According to the Save Crown Hill Cemetery group, more than 300 public comments were submitted on the proposal, significantly exceeding initial expectations. The group also says the project is currently on hold after the city determined the applicant had not demonstrated legal access to the site, requiring additional steps before it can move forward.

As part of its efforts, the group has organized a petition calling for additional environmental review and is coordinating volunteers, legal support, and political outreach.

A separate public meeting hosted by the City of Seattle’s Department of Construction and Inspections (SDCI) is scheduled for Monday, April 6 from 5 to 6 p.m. The meeting will be held virtually via Webex, with an option to watch in person at Seattle Municipal Tower.

The April 6 meeting will focus on the land use application and required reviews, which include approvals related to zoning, utilities, and fire safety. Members of the public can sign up in advance to provide comment.

Project documents, including application materials and environmental information, are available through the Seattle Services Portal by searching the project number.
