Signs go up at ‘Leva on Market’

Posted by Geeky Swedes on December 9th, 2008

The fence has come down surrounding the large apartment building under construction on Market St. just to the west of Walgreens.

And the “now leasing” signs are up. It’s called “Leva on Market.”

So far, no word on which retailers will be moving into the street-level spaces.

I think the larger building on Market is apartments - they are advertising as such in the apartment magzines/website. If I am not mistaken, the other building just south will be condos.
  • Geeky Swedes
You are correct, thank you. Made the fix.
  • candice.
It's a damn good thing they opened. I was starting to worry we'd have a condo shortage.

    Phew... that was close.
  • candice.
Apparently I can't read... because there IS a condo shortage.
  • Nubbee
Im so glad the fences are down, so ugly. And it will be nice to have some new apartments in Ballard.
  • boardbrown
What a fabulous location. Busy street, next door to the fire house (have fun with those sirens), and right across the street from 7-11, where you can get mugged by a vagrant band of teens.

    I'm totally there!
  • B
boardbrown - You have a right to post your opinion as much as anyone, but I wish you would quit your habit of using these boards to sarcastically dismiss other people's ideas and choices.
  • ding
    what do they rent for?
  • BlackSheep
When they ARE bothered by the sirens, will the city go after the fire station like they go after the pre-existing clubs that bother the new residents?

Agreed about the upstanding citizens that hang out at 7-11, boardbrown - hopefully, more people living in that area will make it less cozy for them, or at least safer for the rest of us!
  • candice.
ding: I was wondering the same thing. You'd think their marketing director would at least had the brains to finish the website before they went up for rent.
  • boardbrown
That's exactly my point Blacksheep...I hope so too. Plus, who's really going to miss the Chinese buffet that was there before?
  • Dylin
Hey Candice, I found pricing on move.com: http://www.move.com/apartments/listing/C716625.

They seem a bit overpriced to me...
  • boardbrown
Sorry, B. Here is an edited copy of my first comment, minus the sarcasm.

"What a bad location. Busy street, next door to the fire house (have fun with those sirens), and right across the street from 7-11, where you can get mugged by a vagrant band of teens.

I wouldn't want to live there."
  • gordy
The first floor retail space looks like it will be pretty nice. I don't understand why they bothered with those exterior decks that look to be one foot deep. Very glad the fences are down and the sidewalks are open again.
  • candice.
Dylin: a "bit too overpriced" is a freakin' understatment!

A one bedroom is going for the same as my mortgage payment on my HOUSE that came complete with a YARD!

If you're stupid enough to drop that kind of money on rent you deserve to get mugged by those kids at the 7-11.
  • Bark more, Wag less
    >>>A one bedroom is going for the same as my mortgage payment on my HOUSE that came complete with a YARD!

What's with the class envy in Ballard? Can't some people accept that others may be doing better then they are, and can therefore spent their money the way they wish? Maybe some folks don't want a yard?

Welcome to Seattle: home of the intolerant tolerant.
  • Dylin
Hey Bark more, I'm with you, but did you look at those apts? The quality does look low for the price. I pay almost that much for an apt nearby, but it looks like it has nicer amenities and better construction.
  • candice.
I understand some folks don't want yards and I also understand that some folks aren't settled enough to buy (which is why they wouldn't spend the same amount on a monthly payment for a condo). But jeez!

I have a really hard time wrapping my brain around why some people would throw their money away to live in a "luxury" apt right next to a freakin' fire station with shoddy construction. But hey... if they want to spend their money that way then go for it. I, on the other hand, will save my extra money for other things.
  • boardbrown
There's no better time to buy. Rates and prices are insane, and there's a ton of inventory.
  • E/C
supply and demand..remember just a few weeks ago when gas was almost $4 and is now about $1.85? It's all about supply and demand...the prices will go to those that want to pay...and it will lower if they want to attract more buyer/renters who want to pay less... I might feel pretty safe living next to a firehouse, and the locationis great....you can walk to everything! It's promoting city living not peace and tranquilty in a forest reserve ya know...
  • Sheila
"Welcome to Seattle: home of the intolerant tolerant." I've thought the same thing for a while. But, I do agree that the apartments are overpriced for the square footage/location. That's just my option and I don't feel the need to have everyone agree with me.
  • BlackSheep
I'm with you, Candice. For $26,000.00/year, I'd like to own something.
  • michncraig
    @7

I enjoy this blog because I LIKE to laugh when people sarcastically dismiss the opinions of others.

Sarcastic people are part of the "community" too.
  • BlackSheep
I guess that means michncraig won't be supporting my campaign to restrict boardbrown's comments to "Agreed!", and "What a wonderful idea!".

    Crap. Was that sarcastic??
  • B
    Okay, you win.

Make myballard.com your clubhouse for making snarky comments. Go ahead and turn (nearly) every issue into a joke about how stupid people are when they live differently than you.

    Enjoy!
  • pinkponiesOfBallard
Thanks for giving us the ok B. I was worried about what you might think. Matter of fact, I lost exactly .0005 seconds of sleep. Oops, was that sarcastic? Oh, you gave me the ok!
  • boardbrown
    Agreed. What a wonderful idea!
  • Iloveseatown
Damn...I pay half that to rent a whole house in Ballard!!!!

I'm betting they stay mostly empty for a long time.
  • BlackSheep
Thank you, boardbrown - I was afraid we would have trouble getting you into compliance. LOL
  • E/C
wow...lots of sensitive folks...we should make an effort to keep to the facts of the article or subject we are discussing...that is what this is all about right? I'd hate to think with a few of us with a misguided sense of humor or inappropriate timing for remarks would be accused of demeaning peopel who live differently than us...that not the kind of place I think Ballard is anyway...in my opinion we love our community and get a bit upset when condos seemingly overtake our once quaint spaces, and prices get elevated, as well as opening up the small spaces that are left to homeless communities that have the potential to harm our neighborhoods, children and our abiity to walk around our town without fear fo being mugged, beaten or knifed...I am sure anyone who took the time to build these apts, condos all took into consideration the price point and the "audience" they may be wrong...but I do not know of any property or apt that has ever been sold or rented to someone by force...no one has to pay it or buy it...so those who do, they obviously are making a choice that is good for them financially and emotionally...so great for them! right?
  • Wendi
Thank you E/C. I really appreciate this blog for its timeliness with news and local happenings/issues. I'm getting so tired of the comments becoming a litany of people's bantering with each other on a personal level, rather than a discussion about the original post. Once again I clicked on the comments link to this post hoping that someone would have more info on the apartments/condos/whatever, and once again I am disappointed that it's the same group of people bitching about the same old stuff. Don't we have more intriguing things to talk about than ripping on each other? Please do that somewhere else and leave this blog for quality information and community updates. Share opinions, but please express them using some semblance of a sense of community. That's why I moved to Ballard - people are friendly and there is a great sense of community - which unfortunately is not represented by commenters on this blog much anymore :(

    Wendi-
I agree..lkets all make an effort to stick to the posting. Our comments are meant to be editorials. Maybe the geeky swedes can put a "I want to vent and dis one another" area for them to all get it out....
  • Laughably high rent (I pay less than that to rent a 3 bedroom 2 bath house with yard on the west side of 32nd) and that location blows ... Market & 15th is a terrible area after dark.

    PT Barnum in full effect.
  • scrumbum
Oh great, now we're being told the proper decorum for commenting on a public site. Some people communicate exclusively via sarcasm, irony and dark wit. Read between the lines and you might actually learn something. Now, about the condos? I think they were built for Wallingford types that like to slum on the weekends.
  • Ballard girl
    Scrumbum....Xsteve
No one will make you live there, so relax...have you read the "commnet rules" ?

Here let me help by putting them here:

    Comment Rules
Although we have a rather liberal approach to comments on MyBallard.com, we have a few rules to ensure the discussions are kept civil and constructive:

    1. Do not use obscene or offensive language, especially when directed toward someone else. Be respectful. You may not post or link to any material that could be considered obscene, indecent, lewd, pornographic, violent, abusive, insulting, threatening, harassing or in violation of the law.

    2. We’re particularly strict about any comments with racist or homophobic language. They will be deleted and the commenter may be banned.

    3. Tell the truth. You may not post or link to any material that could be considered libelous, defamatory or false.

    4. Respect the privacy of others. Do not harvest or otherwise collect names, email addresses or other identifying information from other participants. Do not post anyone’s personal information.

    5. Don’t misrepresent yourself as someone else.

We do not moderate or edit user-submitted content, but we periodically monitor the comments. If you notice a comment that breaks the rules, please email us at tips@myballard.com. If it’s in violation, it will be deleted and the commenter may be banned.

    Thank you for your help,

Ballard (nee Wallingford) Girl. Pray tell, which mortal sin did I commit? Was it sin #1 or sin #3? Or did you buy a unit here and you're justifying it by appointing yourself board monitor for those that criticize your decision?
  • BlackSheep
Agreed - which rule is being broken? Not seeing it...
  • angelatini
Wow. I can't believe the irony of this discussion. So, the people who are accused of being sarcastic are "intolerant" of people who can afford to live better than them. But the people who are sensitive to sarcasm are intolerant of the people who are sarcastic.

Sarcasm is just humor people...get the frig over it. It's a public forum, if you can't handle sarcasm, I question your ability to function in this world.
  • angelatini
And for the record...I live right near those lovely apartments...and the one that was built right across the street from it...and before that...

I am just plain sick of construction. If you want to waste your money on those apartments, then go ahead. I support your decision, no matter how bad an investment it may prove to be.
