The melted snow reveals nasty potholes

Posted by Geeky Swedes on December 29th, 2008

As you may have noticed, potholes are springing up (or dropping down) all over Ballard. And these aren’t your usual variety.

We found this one on Leary just in front of Zaw Pizza. It’s so deep, you can see the old brick road underneath. The city says that the Pothole Rangers are out filling the many potholes around Seattle. If you’d like to let the city know about a pothole you can use this form or call 206-684-ROAD (7623.) And if you’ve seen a particularly nasty pothole, let everyone know below…

According to the SDOT pavement group a month ago, they still had a $300M backlog in repairs needed on arterials and they don't even know how much repair is needed on the 2000 lane-miles of non-arterials but they only have budget to rebuild 1 lane-mile per year of non-arterial.

We need to get these folks the budget that they need to keep the roads in good repair. Unfortunately I think that the "Bridging the Gap" levy only bridged 1/3rd or less of the needed budget gap.

    cdc,

If you are filing a claim for a hubcap you should be smacked, I agree. But when you drive something a little more...lets say a car without hubcaps replacing a rim and tire can quickly exceed 700-1100.00. Not to mention a bent A-arm or other suspension component.

It is expected to drive with all due diligence but when you are faced with sideswiping one of the many illegally/poorly parked cars or hitting somone head on the rim is going to be my first choice.

The city should fix the issue correctly and properly the first time instead of having the Tax Rangers employed until the Rapture.

Here's the info on filing a claim against the City:

Why, exactly, should tax dollars be spent buying a new hubcap for someone who couldn't be bothered to drive in a manner consistent with the condition of the road, like everyone else? It's not like it's a big secret that roads have potholes.

Better to spend the money on fixing the pavement so we all benefit.

Youll notice that this was a pothole recently filled by Nickel's gypsy band of pothole rangers. Simply put you cannot fill a pothole with new asphalt and expect it to to be fixed. This is yet another way the city cheaps out and expects us to be thankful. You might as well put your taxes into one of the holes recently "fixed".

The city/state will very slowly re-imburse you for damages....maybe. They will often argue that you could have avoided the pot hole safely and therefore they have no responsibility or you were driving recklessly. Seriously.

My wife was reimbursed about 2 years ago from the city from pothole damage; so as of then at least, they did.

Does anyone know whether the City/County still reimburses for vehicle damage due to potholes?

I don't know which govt entity it was, but some years ago a friend had hubcap & tire damaged by a pothole. She submitted paperwork & she received reimbursement. Probably circa 1990.

Right as you get onto the Ballard Bridge (southbound, toward Seattle - left lane) there's a new hole from the snow :-(

If the city used good solid concrete instead of asphalt to pave the streets then we wouldn't have this problem.

Do the Pothole Rangers wear cool uniforms? The name implies so...

My car almost fell in one this morning. Poor little xB was trembling in fright!

There's a real shocker of a pothole in the left northbound lane of 15th, north of 85th. Just past the value village. There's one small shallow line of them first that lulls you into a false sense of security - "oh, just little potholes, lalalala" and then BLAMMO - down to the old roadbed, sharp squared off edges, BAD pothole. It's a sports-car-eating pothole.
