New Thai restaurant opens on 20th Ave.

Posted by Geeky Swedes on December 30th, 2008

From the owners of Phuket on Queen Anne comes Uma, a new Thai restaurant in Ballard that just opened in Thai Cafe’s old location on 20th Ave.

Uma opened on Monday with a remodeled interior. It’s still awaiting a liquor license and only accepts cash for the time being. We have yet to give it a try, but if you do, please post your thoughts in comments below…

Tonight we dined at Uma's with friends and had great delicious food. The food was cooked just right and the sauces were created with perfection. The management was delightful and our night was fun and we will be returning for more delicious food. It came quickly and hot and we paid with a credit card no problem. This is a wonderful addition to the fun places to eat in Ballard.

I have eaten at Uma's 3x already!! Each time I was very happy with the food and friendly service. I found it to be very much cleaner, pleasant and newly decorated than the old Thai cafe. I paid with credit card and the liquor license should arrive shortly. It's a nice place to eat at a very reasonable price.

I dined there this week for lunch and thought it was an excellent find. Delicious yellow curry and - amazing - reasonably priced! A rare find these days, I'm glad Uma has come to Ballard.

I ate lunch there recently and really enjoyed the combo...the kee mao and tom kha were really good, and the portions were large. The decor is really nice and feels more open and restful than Thai Cafe (although loved them too). The service was very attentive and friendly. My friend had panang and loved it. I think I might go there again tonight, now that I think of it!

I love Uma Thai! Their Yellow Curry rocks my world! I'm guessing if someone felt sick the next day, it's something else they ate! My experience has been only the freshest and most fabulous at Uma!

OH NO!!! I loved Thai Cafe and always wondered why it wasn't busier. I told all my friends and every time I brought someone they loved it too. I need a new Thai restaurant (and the reviews so far aren't pointing me towards Uma...)

In my opinion Phuket is one of the most mediocre, and sometimes subpar, Thai restaurants in the city. There are some truly amazing places to get Thai food of various sorts in town. So the news that the Phuket folks have opened another restaurant isn't terribly exciting to me. Maybe Uma will be different, I'd like to hope so, but The Ballard Gourmand's review doesn't exactly fill me with hope.

Oh, dear! I was a HUGE fan of the Thai Cafe for several years. But when I didn't work nearby anymore, I only managed to eat there twice in the last few years. I'm so sorry to hear that they're gone.

And I because of someone with that same name that works at the nearby hospital who I abhor, I won't be in any hurry to eat there. I'm sure there's no relation, but I'll let others try it first.

I only recently dined there and was in my opinion blessed with the most exquisite diarrhea afterward, the consistency of which was not unlike tossing a cup of hot cocoa into the bathroom bowl.

If one is in the market for fine dining at affordable prices and an evening's chaser of urgent, shocking, red hot squats, might I suggest a trip to Uma? You will loudly shout your thanks from the loo!

Oh no, I thought they were just remodelling... I will really miss Thai Cafe, they were my favorite little Thai joint in the area.

Phuket in Queen Anne is pretty good though (lots of fresh vegetable dishes if I recall) so I'll be interested to check Uma out.
