Apartment fire on 65th draws large response

Posted by Geeky Swedes on January 1st, 2009

A large dispatch of fire crews responded to a scene of a fire at a small apartment building at 65th St. at 16th Ave. just before 11 a.m. Thursday.

We arrived and saw smoke pouring from the back of the building.

Initially, crews were worried there may be people trapped inside, which explains the very large response. Fortunately, everyone made it out OK.

The fire was “tapped” (or put down) within minutes. 65th St. was closed from 15th Ave. to 17th Ave. for about 45 minutes.

Adds Sharon in comments: “We live directly behind this building and have a view into their yard…. It looks like the damage is total in at least one unit (bottom east) and I wouldn’t be surprised if the whole building is beyond repair from what I can see.”

I live right by this house. If it's the basement apartment does anyone know if a tenant started it? The gal that lived in the basement around 5 months ago tried to kill herself. I was wondering if it was related? She seemed so troubled, just hoping she's ok.

Tear it down and build more condos.

Looks like they're pulling the remaining stuff out of the apartment now and hosing it off now. Very sad.

We live directly behind this building and have a view into their yard. Looks like the FD is checking the building for stability at this point. The building is still smoldering and my asthma is starting up.

It looks like the damage is total in at least one unit (bottom east) and I wouldn't be surprised if the whole building is beyond repair from what I can see.

So sad, I'm glad to hear everyone made it out okay.

When we heard the sirens, I told my husband to wait 20 minutes - it would be posted on here.

    Sure enough....good work!!
