Liquor store burglarized overnight

Posted by Geeky Swedes on March 18th, 2009

Someone threw a big rock through a window at the liquor store on Market St. sometime late last night or early this morning.

When we arrived just before 7 a.m., McIntosh Glass was measuring for a new window. He says he got the call around 3:45 a.m. The liquor store manager didn’t have his emergency number, so he got there as soon as he listened to his messages. (Thanks SBA for the tip!)

I happened to run into Art Olsen today, who is the landlord for many of the businesses in old Ballard..and he told us that the guitar shop was borken into the other night, and over $800 worth of equipment stolen..you can see the board on the front door. He may not be the main charge of the police reports, but in all his years here, he is definitely concerned about the upswing in crime, and he attributes it to the 20 somthing group of what he referred to as an organized group targeting businesses where cash can be had..his biggest concern was grafitti, saying thast it cause countless dollars in dmamge more than what is reported in actual product stolen from merhants…over $100,000 in damages done to to buildings to have it all repaired. I know he mentioned that he thought a comback in the “beat cops” is the only thing that will bring Ballard back to some sort of normalcy. that and lots and lots of security cameras…

I was told what happened here today. A Ballard local homeless man, who is well known, got very drunk and smashed the window to get some wine. Why did he not take more than one bottle? Totally drunk, and he was lucky to have staggered off with the one bottle he got. The story and name of the man is well known amomg the Ballard homeless.

    So, that solves that mystery

    Nothing more complicated than that

Thanks Geeky Swedes for watching over the site. I didn't see the link referred to, but from the description so glad I missed it.
I also very much appreciate the times you've removed posts that get out of hand and away from the topic.
Keep up the great work you do here!

    Jim Forman says:
For months, small businesses have been targeted under similar circumstances.
    Months? For months???

Try more like 140 years, in Seattle alone. Longer elsewhere.

    Thanks Larson!

Do you think Jim Foreman has been reading this blog and saw my post?

    That IS funny.

jm... I feel like a confused tweaker after reading through this thread.

I drove by that 7-11 yesterday around 4:45 PM and only saw one confused tweaker on the corner.

Good Rick, if it were possible to verify all of the posts, it would be a great thing, however, as exampled here today, we'd have more mis-information and libel than we currently have to deal with, and the ramifications would be much greater, not just a nuisance, much, much, greater.
However, I'm thinking that if anyone could pull it off...it would be the Swedes.

This is part of a message (post by "Regular" left in the post about he police chase this moring...great info if anyone wants to call a meeting:

Stop confining your concerns to this blog. Instead, take action and contact the Captain of the Seattle Police Department’s North Precinct, which has responsiblity for Ballard. His name is Capt. Mike Washburn, and his email is: michael.washburn@seattle.gov. The main contact phone for the precinct is (206) 684-0850

Ask him to set up a meeting with you and other concerned residents and business owners to talk about your concerns and their plans to address them. Don’t let them push you off on Neil Hansen, the Crime Prevention guy…he’s totally worthless and powerless.

You have also referenced another SPD Officer on here, Devlin Haag. Officer Haag is the Community Policing Team officer assigned solely to Ballard/Crown Hill. His email is devlin.haag@seattle.gov . His Sargeant on The North Precinct CPT team is Sgt. Dianne Newsom - (206) 684-0794. or dianne.newsom@seattle.gov

There’s an interesting description of the CPT objectives on the SPD website. Not sure how based in reality it is, but it reads as follows:

    WHAT DO CPT OFFICERS DO?

“While patrol officers assigned to a certain beat and sector are usually very familiar with the area they patrol, CPT Officers go one step further. CPT officers do not respond to 911 calls for service and are instead assigned a specific area to focus on long-term, often chronic problems. They patrol many times a day, checking and re-checking known “hot spots”.

It is their job to know the residents in troubled apartments, to recognize by sight, the “regulars” who congregate on the corner, and to understand the ongoing problems and concerns of neighbors and businesses. Residents and business owners get to know and trust the officers, making it easier to work together to resolve and prevent problems. CPT is about understanding ongoing issues that go back weeks and months and taking steps to prevent problems before they arise. The officers are a unique and invaluable resource in the communities they serve. ”

And finally, if you are concerned about what happens to the people who actually do get arrested, you should voice your concerns about quick release back onto the streets to:

Ed McKenna, the Police Department’s North Precinct liaison from the City Attorney’s Office, can be reached at 206-684-7765 or edward.mckenna@seattle.gov.

SPG, greetings freind. I have called the number, which I rec'd. after I had no satisfaction from the owner of that franchise. My complaints were noted, the police presence in the area increased, for a time, almost dealt with the issue myself, I thought. Things are worse now than they were then, and now the clerks just laugh at those guys, "ah, they just crazy" like I don't 'get it'. Yeah, it's frustrating, but I aint letting up!
I told them to take down the no-loitering sign if they were just going to use it as a ruse to this community. I'd take it down myself if I was looking for '3 hots and a cot'.

How do we harness all the power of this blog to fight crime? Lots of eyes and ears out there as this blog attests. Can we start a block watch thread? Maybe something like America's Most Wanted where posts, pictures, etc. can give hints for others on this site to help stop these criminals in their tracks.

(Sorry if this becomes a double post while the Geeky Swedes check the link to make sure it's ok)

You can also contact 7-11’s HQ and tell them about it if the store owner doesn’t want to do anything.

    (Minus the link)

    Customer Relations:
    7-Eleven, Inc.

    Loc. 231

    Dallas, TX 75221
    Phone: 800-255-0711

I don't know for sure what 7-11 will do, but most franchise companies will log the complaints and when they get more than a couple will then take some action. If the store owner thinks his franchise is in jeopardy, he'll act quickly.

I can attest, having called the owner numerous times, he's not interesting in anything more than selling the tall boys to these folks, the no-loitering sign is ignored by all, inside and out.
I understand that as a business, you can't be making a nuisance of yourself, the more times you call 911 the more you are 'the problem', not the solution.
I'd like to suggest that they handle that issue themselves...if not, it will be handled for them, this community can't tolerate any other option.
btw, it's a common pan-handling location, and we have to tell them NO. (I'd suggest politeness, even kindness, but be firm!)
  • Black Helicopter Operations
There are more free lunches and food banks in Seattle than these people could ever visit. I agree and will absolutley not spend my limited money at any place in Ballard with transients allowed to sit out frount or inside.

If these places allow this, they are part of the problem. Tell the manager you are going elsewhere, and to have a nice time running a shelter rather than a business. The few businesses, mostly coffee shops that allow endless transients to hang out have got to be held accountable. BOYCOTT THEM AND LET THEM KNOW WHY. Call the corporate offices if you get nowhere with the manager.

CALL 7 11'S CORPORATE OFFICE AND TELL THEM THERE IS AN OPEN AIR DRUG MARKET BY THE PAY PHONE AT 7 11 ON MARKET STREET.

THE OWNER WILL NOT ADDRESS. HE HAS BEEN CALLED COUNTLESS TIMES ABOUT THIS. ITS USELESS TO TRY ANY MORE.
  • chopper_74
hmmm...radio silence? Listen folks, we are not the 'bad guys' here, we are the good guys...with 'the name', with an iron in this fire, and everything to loose. We hope that the community gains, collectively, or it just isn't worth it. I question my publicity here daily, today being a great example, I don't care for the attention, I care for the place I live and work, and have for years, actively. I've shoveled walks, cleared drains, all the stuff that you all expect someone else to do, whenever it needs done. I also walk these streets nightly, as I have always done, because I believe in a safe and welcome civic center. My reach is limited, but with help?...who knows.
    Chime up Ballard

It will be the best day of your life too.
If anyone knows of where they think we could do some good. Let us know already? Is there a location, a presence in your neck of this wood, that you'd like to have more time to look after? Of course there is...pipe up people!
    Or suffer the fools...

Bums, bums, bums. Nothing pisses me off more then a piss drenched, trash eating, jobless, beggar. Don't ask me for some spare change, because, I ain't stupid, mother ****er. I know you want that SPARE CHANGE for either crack or vodka, and I know with all the begging your worthless, odor filled ass has done, you have more $$$$ in your roach infested pocket than I do. Meaning you have enough to eat at the ****ing olive garden. But bums rather eat at the McDonalds, because that restaurant is as dirty and greasy as there entire bodies.(rumor has it that there's more filth and grease in a bum's body to open up 1000 McDonalds. I'm still investigating on this though.) But anyway, any restaurant that lets a bum in should be fumigated instantly. Restaurants shouldn't even allow bums in. All restaurants should have a security guard that personally sprays a bum down with a firehose, if the bum comes within 500 ft. of the restaurant.

Basically, if you didn't know this, being a bum is a job. It's a evil scam to rob people out of there money and use that money for all the wrong reasons. (like telemarketers .) If you're gonna give a bum money, why not put a big sign on your house that says "ROB ME, I GOT MONEY". And when that robber comes in, hand him all your money with no resistance, don't call the cops and smile gleefully. Your thinking i'm nuts, but it's the same exact thing as giving a bum money.

Now how is being a bum a job?? Well, you have to look like you've been abused for years, raised in a dust cloud and smell like you bathe in tubs full of feces and sweat. The more horrific and abused the bum looks, the more $$$ he'll get from a ****er and basically, he'll blow the money on crack. Mother ****er. I'm demanding people nation-wide to boycott homeless people. Do not give them cash, do not give them a blanket, do not give them anything. Let them freeze to death, and maybe we can use there corpses to grow some nice marijuana plants. And I'm demanding people to mug any bum that you see. Steal all his money, no matter if its just a nickel. Teach that crack fiend a lesson, and deliver a golden shower upon his ugly rash infested face. "Here you want something to drink?" Then **** in his mouth and tell him "Here's your meal for the nite, mother ****er."

The media tries to garner sympathy out of people toward the homeless, like it's not their fault they live in a cardboard box and reak of unknown odors. Listen, you change rattling ass, get a JOB. Here are the steps to getting a job.

1.) Don't be a lazy slob. Find a place with a NOW HIRING sign.

2.) Walk inside. To make this easier, pretend your walking into the liquor store, or the local crack house.

3.) Ask for application. (or in your case, babble incoherently for one.)

4.) Fill it out, but realize you can't put down dumpster behind Won Fok's restaurant as your address.

5.) Realize your useless to society and commit suicide like you should have when the thought 1st crossed your mind.

"this supposed crime wave is being blamed by some on the homeless"

No, people are arguing that the crime problems we have and influx of bums are both degrading the quality of life in Ballard and both must be stopped.

Yet again, Ballard's very own 'public intellectual' stands up like the mental midget he is.
  • chopper_74
    ok elenchos, (both barrels)
1."The reason it matters whether or not the crime wave is real is mostly that this supposed crime wave is being blamed by some on the homeless."

The homeless are indeed part of the issue.
2."Of course if this increase in crime is real, it would be nice if we would hold off demonizing the homeless until we have some proof that they are to blame."

Really, elenchos, you need more proof? It's like your begging for more proof! I am begging for less proof! So, who wins, omg, I hope it aint you.

3."It’s good policy to stick close to reality."

I'd hope that you'd be the first to follow that advice...you have fallen short my friend.
    chopper out....and about.
  • elenchos
I think this is important so I'll repeat it.

The reason it matters whether or not the crime wave is real is mostly that this supposed crime wave is being blamed by some on the homeless. If there is no crime wave in spite of the presence of the food bank and the shelter, then it shows that blaming them was off base.

Of course if this increase in crime is real, it would be nice if we would hold off demonizing the homeless until we have some proof that they are to blame.

There are other advantages, besides this, to being factual and prudent rather rather than going off on a crusade without solid evidence. It's good policy to stick close to reality.

I think it is great to have My Ballard here publicizing the stories that the media didn't have time for in the past, but we need a sense of perspective and scale if we're going to keep our heads.

here is elenchos's quote from post #98 in the nieghborhood meeting about the church/homless shelter:

"If you follow the link it allows you to see crime down to the census tract level for the decade from 1997 to 2007. You can break it out by type of crime and can view a trend line for the decade for that census tract and type of crime."

He definitley states crime is down based on a link that ended info in 2007

Trust me I did check his statements before I responded it was just not under this particular heading, so I apologize for the confusion.

Here is a very interesting concept that has been around for few years in Chicago. This site uses google map technology to breakout in great detail where crime is occuring in the city. It is a great tool for visitors or newcomers to the city.

    http://chicago.everyblock.com/crime/

I don't know if there is such a map going for Seattle yet. I wish there were. It seems that we would all be a little more certain regarding Ballard crime rates.

    Knowledge is key!
  • PDX Ballardite
Ernie, I think you're right. This blog gives people a forum to discuss reported crimes -- crimes that are usually too routine or run of the mill to land in the papers or on TV. MB.com does an excellent job of reporting on smaller, local crimes. But, by doing this, the perception is that crime is skyrocketing in Ballard. May or may not be the truth ... but nevertheless, the perception is there. And it fuels paranoia -- like what's been going on for the past few months with posts about break-ins, car prowls and the homeless. Not to say these aren't problems ... but things like this have been happening in Ballard for decades. This blog just does a better job of pointing them out to readers.
  • skeptical
There are no good public records of recent data that I can find. Here are more nuanced statistics on crime based on beat and type of crime: http://www.seattle.gov/police/crime/stats.htm (scroll down to the bottom of the page to look at the excel sheets for precinct data). Unfortunately, they only go to last summer, placing the end of the data around the same time that people started feeling an increase in crime. You would need good comparative figures here since the high crime area reported on MyBallard is actually at the intersection of the B2, B3, and J2 beats.

There is no data set that I know of which can unequivocally confirm or deny a very recent increase in crime. So, I share a sense of reticence to simply say crime is up. But, elenchos, it seems as if you imply that people who say crime is up are wrong because they lack data. Lack of data doesn't disconfirm a recent uptick; it merely establishes an assertion that demands confirmation. Right now that data is not available.

I agree with you that increased coverage of these burglaries can lead to an unfounded sense of increased crime. This doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t talk about an increased sense of criminal activity (for it might very well turn out to be accurate), but the key word is sense. MyBallard was around last year and just searching the articles tagged with crime shows only a handful of stories about crime in Ballard. It is possible that a year ago GeekySwedes wasn’t doing active police beat reporting or it might also mean that there was less crime to report on.
  • Vagrant

e/c, you're not looking too bright here. No, elenchos did not claim crime was down, nor claim they had "proven" crime was down.
  • e/c
elenchos--"calm down everything will be all right"...are you snorting baby formula?

"Please get a grip. Calm down. It’s going to be OK. There is no need to make things up, no need to exaggerate."

I merely stated that by news reports, and based on my 12 years lving here, it "appears" crime is up based on the fact I do read and listen to the news on a pretty regular basis...no stats...YOU provided what you called "proof" that crime is DOWN...so all I asked for was proof on your claim that it at least current.

I did not make anything up or blow trhe facts out of proportion...I quoted the news, and police reports for a 4 week period...seems those are the facts , and since you claim crime is actually down and thre is mass hysteria..then all I requested is to prove me, and anyone else who may believe crime is actually up here in Ballard wrong...please don't talk to me like I am your toddler...and accuse me of being anything but honest...I quoted the news reports...I have kids your age, as well as a lot more life experience than you can fit on your blog...so please do not insult me. The facts speak for themselves, I look forward to you making a case on whether or not crime is up or down for 2007-2009 in the North Prec. area. I f I am wrong one apology coming up!

Fair enough? Ya sure you betcha!
  • Ernie
I've been trying to stay out of it, but I'm forced to weigh in on the side of elenchos, if for no other reason than I like an underdog.

I think what we have going on here is a "wave" of crime reporting unlike anything that Ballard has ever seen. Thanks to the excellent reporting by the Swedes, and the forum that allows everyone (Thanks Silver!) to post their personal experiences in real time we now know more about local crime than ever before.

This is my OPINION and I am not going to try to back it up with stats. That IS the job of the large news agencies that have access to the police data etc. If there was actually a large increase in crime in Ballard I would expect that we would have seen Jim Foreman "reporting live" from Bergen Park by now. King5 reads these blogs too....
  • chopper_74
kudos's to Macintosh, for chiming in. So, one bottle? Yeah, we've got the brightest homeless around. I know the store has cameras, I wonder if they got a picture of him.
anyhow, I'd like to see a whole lot more walking and talking, and a lot less 'where was BHO? I can truthfully say, that's irrelevant, just as irrelevant as statistical crunching and pontificating...it really doesn't matter, and knowing the exact numbers, up or down, won't even begin to address the issue.
I'll take all the heat you want to dish out, it's ok, I'm too tired to give a damn... btw, Ballard is a lot bigger than I can handle, a little help, please?
  • elenchos
I have no idea what the police reports are for Ballard for the same time period…I did not even have the stats on residentials or car thefts
So here e/c admits having no basis for knowing whether crime is up or down. But then...
Everyone but you agrees crime is up.
Everyone? Is everyone going to whip themselves up into a hysterical panic even though you have no idea whether there was more or less crime in the past.

I think it's great to care about your community, and to participate. I do. But can you just be honest? Don't say crime is up when (for the third time) you have no idea if crime is up or down. No idea.

Please get a grip. Calm down. It's going to be OK. There is no need to make things up, no need to exaggerate. Just stick to the facts that you know and you'll earn respect and trust.

If I can find more information on crime trends, I will be happy to share it. If I can't find data, you won't hear me making claims that I can't substantiate. I'll admit I don't know. Fair enough?

here's the police blotter for the North Precient..perhaps someone can do a comparison and sendd out an excel spreadsheet, or maybe the SPD has one? This website does not seem to be very current or have what was reported in the paper, so not sure where else to look...but I am no intellectual so maybe someone else can provide?

    Seriously, one bottle?

I hope it was a single bottle of something good they got, if it was worth busting into the place like that.

here is a report from the North Prec. for December...does that mean crime is down? am still looking for stats...in case elenchos can't come up with any...

Seattle - Between December 2nd and 11th 2008, Seattle Police Department’s Major Crimes Task Force (MTCF) uncovered a large crime organization involving at least 11 suspects who were Over the course of 10 days the Major Crimes Task Force conducted multiple search warrants in the East, West and North precinct areas. Hundreds of suspected stolen items were recovered during the investigation, to include medical equipment, which was stolen in a car prowl in the north precinct area; this equipment is valued at over $1.4 million. Over the last 3 weeks MCTF detectives have been processing the recovered property. Based on the investigation, MCTF detectives confirmed the crimes were committed in the Seattle area as well as the city of Bellevue. This crime ring may have also impacted other jurisdictions. MCTF detectives are now prepared to distribute photos of the recovered property for crime victims to view, and attempt to identify their stolen property. Detectives have prepared a CD with over 500 photographs of the recovered property for local area news outlets to present to the public.

Thremust be some way to find out...? Everyone but you agrees crime is up..so take the time to prove us wrong...I'll wait...and if I am wrong I will personally apologize for my added hysteria

    Candice--you crack me up!!

I just wanted to give a kudos to the guys from McIntosh Glass. A great Ballard business that I have used many times. As you can see from Tom & Dave's comments... they care about their neighborhood. Good guys, good local company.
  • elenchos
Crime reporting is definitely at an all time high.

How many break ins during the same period last year? You need to compare two statistics, not one, before you can say it is up or down.

Goofy Norwegian said "Facts are it’s about 10-15% of people doing the crimes."

Do you mean 10-15 people? That sounds more like it. If you really mean 10% of us are committing burglaries that would mean 50,000 burglars in Seattle alone.
I know it's frustrating to see this happening in our neighborhood. Hopefully the guys the SPD caught last night will cut down on the crime rate.
This break in sounds more like the work of an angry drunk trying to get drunker.

More Ballard burglary news reported onSeattleP-I.com this morning.

The money is not in turning a profit off of someone elses misery. I think it is in collecting parking fees.

This really crosses a line. The liquor store is one of the most sacred places in Ballard. I blame the hoards of homeless people at Bergan Place.
  • @goofy norwegian - "Yes, I can spell recitivism".

Actually, no, it doesn't appear that you can.

    recidivism

Hi Dave and Tom. How do I open my own glass business? It seems like it's a good business to be in diuring a recession - plenty of business. As long as most of our neighbors are warm and fuzzy towards allowing any shelter to set up shop here, you'll be able to retire early. Keep up the good work of repairing Ballard.
  • Dave McIntosh
Do not believe that the police or alrms will protect your business. Many times we have been there before them. Get to know your neighbors.
  • jm
    Recidivism? Are you awake yet?
  • Goofy Norwegian
So people have alarms/cameras. BFD. Obviuosly it doesn't stop a damn thing. WTF is it going to take here soon? Your place being broken into while you're there? Do we really have to get the obligatory "this stuff never happens in my neighborhood" from area residents? Facts are it's about 10-15% of people doing the crimes. Yes, I can spell recitivism. This aint new either. Fiddle away yuppies. Ballard is burning.
  • Tm
All that damage for one bottle. Yes one bottle

    Me in picture
  • I heard this one on the scanner, too, but was too sleepy to pay attention. I don't remember if it came in as an alarm or if a concerned citizen called it in.

Keep your eyes and ears open, folks - that's what saved the Ballard Sip 'n Ship!
  • candice.
Not the liquor store!!! That's my favorite store on Market!
  • e/c
    and crime is not up?

This makes 16 break ins in Ballard in 4 weeks
  • jm
    Where is BHO?
  • Dave McIntosh
That is my brother and partner Tom McIntosh in the picture. We own the BALLARD Business of McIntosh Glass Inc.
Were still here after 25 years.
  • jm
Did the store have an alarm or security cameras?
  • Vagrant
What was taken from a liquor store on a street packed with winos?

    Let me guess............
