Nightline’s debate over Satan now online

Posted by Geeky Swedes on March 26th, 2009

Last week, ABC Nightline crews took over Mars Hill Church in Ballard to videotape an unusual debate: Does Satan exist? Among the debaters, Mars Hill Pastor Mark Driscoll and philosopher Deepak Chopra.

“There were approximately 800 people in attendance,” Cliff Ellis from Mars Hill told My Ballard earlier this week. “It will be interesting to see how two hours of footage is edited down to three ten-minute segments.” The show airs tonight on ABC at 11:30 p.m., but it’s already available online right here.

    driscoll's a clown.

    chopra is too.

wtf did you expect, an epiphany?

just wait til driscoll's "hooker n blow" moment w/ some tranny from bellevue explodes. then, you can really believe in satan.

I have to say as a Christian that I thought this debate was wholly worthless. The whole premise of an airy fairy like "philosopher" Deepak Chopra who does not believe in anything he can not see, other than macro-evolution, and the big bang, (not saying they did not happen, just that he did not see them) vs. Driscoll who I find to be very interesting and somewhat of a charismatic leader in my christian community, to be an effort of futility. the premise of the debate was to find out about Satan and his existence, and no good historical evidence was ever discussed. the only thing I learned is that Opera's guru does not trust anything even his own self validating mind. So how is anyone supposed to trust him?

    garbage.
  • Driscoll is popular because he accepts no gray areas. That's what the simple among us want (and what Chopra calls neurosis and psychosis!).

What really disturbed me was an audience member who said that he liked god/jesus BECAUSE they were a savior outside humankind. Sorry dear, its our job to clean up our mess. Didn't you learn that in kindergarten?

1 John 3:13-14 "Do not be surprised, my brothers, if the world hates you. We know that we have passed from deat to life, because we love our brothers. Anyone who does not love remains in death"

Satan is a personifiation of evil, who we can blame when we don't want to take responsibility. Zorba (the Greek) said, "I have a devil in me too, and his name is 'Zorba'". There is only one God, in all, through all, etc. There is not a God of Good and a God of evil. Satan means adversary.

Oh, just wait folks! As we bear down on times of desperation our fragile human psyche will tremble and reach for the best default, our god. The wooly, warmth to cocoon us against all that is wrong and provide positive, good things. And we need to have the wrong do-er, our fallen angel, the one football players curse when they drop the pass in the end zone, Satan to make sense of the suffering.

So, of course, he has to exist for ratings and membership.

I set my DVR for the 6 night Oprah special on "god and spirit in a bad economy".

All I can say is wow.

I've always felt that Driscoll and the Mars Hill "church" are pretty scary and the rate that it has been growing both depresses and scares the hell out of me. And....No, Alison, many people can not (or think they can not) think for them selves. Otherwise they wouldn't need religion to tell them right from wrong. A desire for community and fellowship can be found in many other ways then buying into the ideals of some charismatic personality.

"he’s considered one of the 50 most influential pastors in the contry."

    really, really scary.

I think they should use his branding tactics to teach PR students. I did some Googling about and he's considered one of the 50 most influential pastors in the contry. Holy smokes! This guy knows how to sell it.

    And with Calvinism to boot!

    @FreeThinker
Mark is just so COOL! I mean, just look at that rad shirt!! There's no other pastor who is sooooooo KEWL!!

Actually. He's marketed himself as a brand that appeals to a certain demographic. Just like how people will only shop at American Apparel, or drink Coke over Pepsi.
  • FreeThinker
I have always wondered what Mark Driscoll has that is so appealing to so many.....finally a chance to hear him speak. Now I am REALLY wondering why anyone would choose to listen to this poor misguided man...sad.
  • Allison
I don't think I get gat all the way through this dreck.

How did a moron like Driscoll become so famous and popular. Can people not think for themselves?
  • Stupid Hippie

  • PT
Oh you got to watch the second part. Actually a Hooker for Jesus sitting next to Driscoll. How priceless. He looks very interested in what she has to say :-)
  • Roadkill
What a joke. What's next, a debate about father time or the new years baby ??
  • Beazulbub
Of course I exist, where do you think all of the Christian Yuppies In Ballard came from?
  • Elttaes
Seriously? This is a question so in the fore front of the minds of the American public it warants a televised debate?

Next week on ABC news we give you the viewer the truth about cooties. Later in the broadcast our correspondents consult leading hedge fund managers on thier feelings about the boogey man. Is he responsible for the housing slump?
  • A debate about which fairy tail we think is most appealing? Great!
