Racially-motivated attack on delivery driver in Ballard

Police are investigating what appears to be a racially-motivated attack in Ballard. Just after midnight on Sunday, a delivery driver was riding his bike on Leary Ave when a man yelled at him. He didn’t hear much of what was said except a racial expletive, so he stopped. The delivery man told police that a half dozen or so white males began yelling at him calling him derogatory names.

After strangers tried to deescalate the situation, one of the suspects picked up a rock and said, “This is for you (redacted),” throwing it at the suspect, the police report states. Several of the other suspects picked up rocks and threw them at the victim. The suspects were drunk and didn’t have good aim, missing the victim, but hitting one of the strangers who stepped in to help. After throwing several rocks, the men left northbound on NW Leary Way.

According to the police report, one of the suspects was wearing a Portland Trailblazer jacket, another was in a Mariners jersey. A witness told police that he recognized the men, that they frequented his place of business, and knew the last name of one suspect.

No suspects are in custody and the Seattle Police Department Bias Crime Detective is now working on the case.
