Hundreds hit the streets for Bike to Work day

Today is the annual Bike to Work day, a day when people are encouraged to leave the car at home and commute on bikes.

We stopped by the rider “commute station” at 8th Ave and the Burke Gilman trail, which is manned by the folks from Friends of the Burke Gilman. We heard from Kevin, who was at the station. He says a total of 671 bicyclists came by between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. “Lots of enthusiasm and support for and from long time bicycle commuters as well as the ‘newbies’,” he explains. “Longest commute reported? An early morning rider headed to Tukwila!” This afternoon from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. is the Bike to Work after party on 22nd between Bergen Place Park and Marvins Garden.

  1. I would have loved to ride my bike to work today. Except that it was stolen from my garage in January. If anyone sees a beautiful, blue Specialized mountain bike–it's mine!!!

  2. It's a statement of support for the Burke-Gilman missing link to be filled in on Shilshole, which is a big bone of contention with some of the businesses there right now. I'm firmly in favor, but then again I'm not a business owner right there — I can see how they'd be worried, though I think they'll actually be better off, when it's done.

  3. Thanks I was just looking at the SEPA Appeal online at Cascade Bike. The docs as filed by all parties feel pretty real, I mean not petty. The trail should be complete, but it looks as if SDOT did not do their job. Still, even if they are told to revisit the SEPA checklist, it could be that the trail ends up going through there anyhow, or it could be the link will be sent in another direction. Not that I’d know how to evaluate all the related concerns they must address.

  4. I rode to work out here in San Diego. It was a 30 mile bike ride and though it made me a bit tired throughout the day (body is not used to that uch work in the morning) I feel a lot better about myself and hope to implement riding to work into a healthier lifestyle, especially because exercise is not as easy in my line of work.

  5. Once again Ballard bicyclers rose to the occasion, and came out in droves, both in the morning commute, and in the afternoon, at the Summer Streets party.

As a Ballard resident, stewed in the local Scandinavian melange, I dream of making our little corner of the city truly reflective of what the Norwegians, Danes, Swedes, et al have done when it comes to providing safe bikeways and walking options, even when mixed with industrial uses.

    Hurrah for Dagen!!

Get on down to the Sittende Mai parade (walking or biking of course) on Sunday in Ballard.
