YouTube shows Ballard Bridge jump in August

Thursday evening, witnesses reported seeing two men jump from the Ballard Bridge. Despite an extensive search on land and water, firefighters and police were unable to locate them. Now a My Ballard reader has discovered this video on YouTube — dated in August of this year — which shows two men jumping from the bridge (please note: offensive language in the video).

The video shows two men jump from the same location as witnesses reported the men jump on Thursday: south of the center of the bridge, on the west side. They both swam to the dock and quickly ran to the south side of the Ship Canal. A bubble over the video exclaims, “Let’s go before we are arrested!” The clip says the two men are named “Frenchie” and “Smilie,” showing their photos. Again, the video is an earlier date, so it’s unclear if this is a repeat performance, copycat or entirely unrelated. (Thanks Silver!)

  1. From the other video on the site, it appears they might be Canadian? They have a “Seattle Times” headline at the end saying “Canucks tear us a new one”.

  2. Save your hard earned wages, seattlemedic. I’ll volunteer to hunt these idiots down for free. I’ll even go as far as (gasp) Canada! I don’t think they intentionally set out to tie up city resources and traffic, but it burns me up nonetheless because I was genuinely concerned. Grrrrr.

  3. I don't really even care that they jumped off the bridge. It's just that after watching the video these two really come of as a couple of LesDouchebagges.

  4. Fine them AND let spend a few months in jail showering with guys named Spike and Leon and then, if Canadian, deport them with a promise that if caught in the US again they'll spend a few years on a chain gang.

  5. Um…any visitor to the US who commits a crime that warrants jail time usually makes them ineligible for re-entry into the US. Same applies to US citizens when traveling abroad typically.

But you can return back to your random ranting on how to describe how we should teach those boys a lesson while shaking your fist.

  6. facebook-1315754085: SPD sent divers into the water looking for them.
Traffic was snarled for quite some time; peoples' day was disrupted without cause.
The person who phoned it in thought he/she was witnessing a suicide attempt which in itself is traumatic.
People thought a suicide was in progress and were trying to either prevent it or deal with the aftermath.
Read the story about it below this one and view the pictures.
You are now enlightened. Keep the light on.

keyboard kitty: I would say this warrants jail. I'd like for the perps to be in front of a judge so the judge could decide. Besides, my earlier post does call for them to informed of the consequences of returning to the US after doing jail time. Heeding that warning is up to them. Illegals are ineligible for entry into the US (hence the term), yet they still come.
I cannot shake my fists as I am typing, nor will I afterwards.
Dispense justice and be done with them; they are not worthy of raising my blood pressure.

  7. @Captain Bligh – why did police even respond to it? If someone wants to commit suicide, why bother? That's what I don't get. (I had a friend who jumped off the Aurora Bridge onto 34th.) I think our laws are sometimes more of an entanglement that a help. So, I don't see a problem with anyone jumping off any bridge. I see a problem with the rest of the world responding to it the way they do. – Not an argument – just another perspective.

  8. Lots of people going across that bridge have sized it up for a recreational jump. Perfect distance for an adrenaline rush yet not really dangerous. Dock to climb onto for egress. I am surprised that people would think suicide from that low of a bridge.

I think that once a year there should be a day, maybe during Seafest, that the jump could be done.

  9. The Aurora Bridge is rough – I do feel sorry for your friend.

I do know it is traumatic for those that witness one or find the body.
Those that work in the Adobe building under the Aurora bridge can attest to that. There are so many jumps off it that the newspapers and major news outlets will not carry them anymore, unless there is a disruption in traffic or some such thing.

Maybe they don't and it is a desperate call for help.
Maybe they are high and having a “bad trip”.
Depression is not permanent but it sure seems so in the middle of it.

Besides, someone needs to collect the body if possible both for health reasons and for the family, if any. Maybe they are not dead and injured. No one wants to let someone die a long, agonizing death.

Maybe it is a basic human instinct to help. To help those regain the will to live; to show that there is always hope with the coming of a new day and to try to get these folks the help they need and deserve.

I am not trying to provoke an argument (of the shouting kind).
I am just trying to answer your questions.

  10. Ummmmm…… I never gave your site permission to use my video footage!! But on the other hand, I am glad you have publicized the fact that jumping off this bridge is completely safe. And ideally should be legal :) Until jumping the Ballard, both French and I (Smiley) were sad and lost. But upon free-falling and hitting the sweet warm accepting waters of Seattle we realized our true worth. And we now know that whenever we are sad we can jump off a bridge and people will care. You have proven that not all Americans voted for George (I-II) Thank you Ballardites for allowing us to find our inner peace on your bridge. We are forever grateful. Love you all sooooo much.
    XOXO GO CANUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. I don't recall giving you permission to jump off of our bridge. Perhaps you could stick to jumping off of Canadian bridges (and wasting Canadian emergency services) in the future?

What a couple of inconsiderate, unimaginative dorks.

  12. We jump all our spans here it is common and safe…….Good clean fun…….. Overreaction is not our fault. And there is no signs posted walking on to the bridge that say jumping is illegal……Maybe your problem is with city hall…Hey I know, hold a rally and do something useful with your time instead of blogging. Just a thought.
