Movie filming at Salmon Bay Elementary

Production trucks have surrounded Salmon Bay Elementary on 65th St. today to film “The Details,” the movie that’s been in production in several Seattle neighborhoods over the last several weeks.

“Not sure if Tobey Maguire will be there, but I saw them filming kids at 9 a.m.,” said My Ballard reader Bruce, who tipped us this morning. When we stopped by, all the filming is taking place inside the school. “The Details” is a dark comedy about a raccoon infestation, so they’re certainly in the right neighborhood. 10 thoughts to “Movie filming at Salmon Bay Elementary”

  1. this is not the first time that movies have been filmed here – or is it?
back in the '90's when the kid attended school there while neighborhood school was rebuilt there was mention of something else that was filmed in then then choir room.

  2. I was just about to ask about this! How awesome would it be if Tobey Maguire was there?! And I don't recall any previous times movies have been shot at Salmon Bay. But last summer, World's Greatest Dad was being shot on sunset hill. That movie turned out really great, btw.

  3. “Twice in A Lifetime” was filmed in Ballard (1985) with Ann Maragaret and Gene Hackman. ” …mainly on Phinnery Ridge and the Locks. “A Slender Thread” with Sidney Poitiier , Ann Bancroft and Telly Salvalas was filmed at Shilshole…and our street. Art Olsen's parent's house was used as the house in the film; all of us kids were extras. (1965.)

I can't remember the name of the movie filmed at James Monroe…anyone? Bueller?

  4. I told my mom that Tobey McGuire was in Ballard doing a movie about a raccoon infestation. She replied 'Well, his career is in the toilet.'
There's probably more to the movie than that, or so I would hope.

  5. I remember at least one movie that was shot at Salmon Bay back in '86 or '87. I snuck on the set and ended up working as an extra. Don't remember the movie though.

Also don't forget Harry and the Hendersons that was filmed on Ballard Ave and all around the neighborhood.

  6. Dogfight, with River Phoenix and Lili Taylor, was filmed on Ballard Ave in 1991. Wasn't Robin Williams just in the neighborhood filming, also (just remembered — World's Greatest Dad, mentioned above)?

  7. The movie made during the 80's at Salman Bay school was called Plain Clothes. A undercover cop went into the high school to see who killed a teacher there. During this filming inside they had a carnival rides set up in the play field as part of the kids going to the fair etc. and the crowning of the high school queen. Up insalman Bay park they turned it into a scene of the fable peter peter pumkin eater for part of it. Fun to see all of the outside activities. They would film at night and had really bright lights that you could see all over the area.

George Wendt, Robert Stack and Abe Vigoda played the weird teachers.

The name of James Monroe up above the doors in front was changed to Stevenson High for the longest of time.

After though filming, they held a rummage sale there for props. i still have some of the vases and a box that I got there.
