My Ballard wins national journalism award

We’re excited to announce that My Ballard has just won an Online Journalism Award for community collaboration, edging out the LA Times and Miami Herald. This is an incredible and surprising honor, and the accolades go to you, our Ballard neighbors who have made this site a special place.

We’ve said from the beginning that My Ballard and the rest of the Next Door Media sites are powered by the neighborhood, not by us. While many journalists over the years have found that idea to be inferior to traditional news coverage, tonight My Ballard was applauded by a packed ballroom of journalists who recognize a new kind of community-powered news that gives the neighborhood a voice. And we have you to thank for your contributions and support.

We’d also like to thank the editors of our other Next Door Media sites: Doree Armstrong and Dale Steinke at PhinneyWood.com, John and Loree Schoonover at MagnoliaVoice.com, Thea Chard at QueenAnneView.com and Heidi Eng of FremontUniverse.com. And finally, we’d like to also thank Tracy Record and Patrick Sand at the West Seattle Blog for the inspiration to create My Ballard. They were the first in the country to create a true community-powered news site, and they deserve more credit than us.

  1. Way to Go! I always check this blog first for Ballard news, and you always have info before anyone else. Definitely a deserved award. Congrats!

  2. No less than you deserve, Geeky Swedes! Congrats!
And I'd like to second that, Seattle Medic. Silver and her scanner (plus your additional updates, Medic) make sure that, just this once, I know what the heck is going on.

  3. Here's another congratulations. From detailed coverage of community meetings, to being an organizing point for events like Woof Da, Ballard Blog is a great thing. Yeah!

  4. This is awesome ! A lot of good information to be found here on My Ballard.
Extremely helpful and the first place I go when seeking information.
    Congratulations Geeky Swedes !

  5. Congratulations and best regards to GeekySwedes and the MyBallard webmasters. Thanks to all the contributors and community members for their comments and up-to-the-minute news. The first place to go for accurate information.

  6. As a newcomer to this state, city and neighborhood, MyBallard is a connection to my newly adopted community. This is where I go to find information and entertainment. It’s where I go to see what my neighbors are thinking and oftentimes get a good laugh. Thanks GeekySwedes, and to everyone who participates here. Whether you’re Old Ballard or New Ballard, you’ve made me feel welcomed and a part of something great.

  7. Congrats, Geeky Swedes and everyone who contributes news and photos. I know I can find whatever info I want on myballard. I feel so blessed to have such a fabulous neighborhood tool to use. By the way, all the Next Door Media sites are so well designed and easy to navigate. I love this because so many other neighborhood blogs are either so visually unorganized that you don't know where to start looking for your info….or they are visually boring. It's not only the content that matters….my ballard is such a clean, attractive and visually stimulating site. Thank you, all!

  8. Congratulations, Geeky Swedes! Truly a well-deserved honor. Thank you so much for creating this place. You are a huge asset to the community.
