Vote for the Ballard Farmers Market as country’s favorite

Shoppers at the Ballard Farmers Market know vendors offer great products, so why not let the rest of the country know?

American Farmland Trust is holding a contest for America’s Favorite Farmers Market. “The contest is designed to raise national awareness about the importance of supporting fresh food from local farms and farmers,” the website states. While there isn’t a major monetary prize, there are bragging rights associated with winning as well as other goodies, such as 500 canvas bags and an outdoor banner to hang up at the market.

You can vote here by typing in “Ballard Farmers Market” in the available space. They will ask you for your email but promise to only send one confirmation email if you opt out of receiving others. Once you vote you will be taken to a donation page. A donation is not required to vote.

  1. if they call it the “country’s favorite”, it’ll get even more crowded.

we might as well just vote it “best place to stroll with your dog on a long leash” or ” best place to amble about with a giant stroller”

  2. Hey folks – when you vote, they will send you an email with the subject “Thank you for voting”. In order to not get any more emails, you need to click on the “manage your account” link at the bottom of the email. Then, on the page that opens, click on the “Special Interests” link, and uncheck the box that is automatically selected that says “Special Offers and Announcements”. Then, check the box that says “Please do not send me email”.

This is necessary even if you do not check the box that says “yes, I would like to receive mail from American Farmland Trust” when you initially vote.

    Hope this is helpful!

  3. ruff, ruff ruff. woof, ruff.

translation: suck it, ballard farmer’s market goers. everyone here has dogs. it’s part of our life. learn to deal with it or move.

  4. sharpei –

maybe if all ballard dog owners obeyed leash laws and cleaned up after their dogs, people would be more tolerant.

for reference, the only off-leash area in ballard is at golden gardens…and it’s on the other side of the tracks from the beach.

there aren’t any off-leash areas at loyal heights cc, salmon bay park, soundview park, crown hill cc (aka small faces), or any of the other parks in ballard where owners let their dogs roam free.

  5. I love the Ballard farmer’s market. Most of the dog owners are just fine (thanks!) but a few really make it a bit of an ordeal. I’m not anti dog–I have two of them. Neither one of them is well suited to an environment like the farmer’s market, so I leave them at home when I go.

  6. And the bike parking—geesh. I agree that something should probably be done (anyone want to start up a bike valet service in the parking lot behind Olsen Furniture?) The reason, though, is that the market is successful and is within an easy bike ride for many people. Vern’s comment reminds me of Yogi Berra talking about Coney Island–nobody goes there anymore because it’s too crowded.

  7. Sorry, but no. The Ballard farmers market is fine, but no Seattle market (I’m looking at you, U District) comes anywhere close to the Saturday PSU farmers market in Portland.

  8. “best place to stroll with your dog on a long leash” or ” best place to amble about with a giant stroller”

Oh god forbid, dogs and families. Can’t have those at a farmer’s market; only single hipsters with their pockets filled with wads of barista tips.

  9. Can you guys try to not be a b*#@^! for just one post. You always have something negative to say. Dinner at your home must be fun…

  10. While I our neighborhood market, I can’t vote for Ballard’s “farmers market” after being spoiled by the thursday night farmers market in San Luis Obispo, CA. A HUGE selection of fresh, cheap, local produce year round, sold by the farmers who grow it (Washington apples will never compare to California apples). Great ambiance, dozens of prepared food stands including some of the best barbecue in the world, free bike valet, and several stages with a variety of live music acts. If you ever make it to the Central Coast of California, it’s a must see.
