Street art to brighten Crown Hill

The Crown Hill Business Association has received a $3,000 grant to paint signal control boxes at five intersections in Crown Hill. Signal control boxes are the big gray boxes that sit at every signalized intersection. Catherine Weatbrook with the CHBA made the announcement at the last Ballard District Council meeting, saying that each box is about an 80 square foot canvas for an artist to work with. Each of the murals will “reflect some aspect that is specific to Crown Hill,” Weatbrook told the group. Examples she gave were the 13 natural ravines, the old orchards, the history of the area in logging and the village. The CHBA is still deciding on artists.

  1. I like Ryan Henry’s stuff, personally.

I also like the idea of painting these boxes. They’ve already done so on a lot of boxes downtown, and I think it’s a really cool way to add a little life and color to the street level. I haven’t spotted a large amount of graffiti on the boxes since they were painted, either, though I haven’t checked recently.

  2. > Should we place bets to see how long until someone with a can of spray paint comes along and ruins them?

I wager 1 weekend. Graffiti in Sunset Hill / Crown Hill has become as bad as everywhere else.

  3. Sure makes me feel wonderful about living in Berkley North. How many children would this $$ feed? Why not send the guys in the green city of Seattle vans out and let ’em paint those green? Guess there’s nothing else pertinent or urgent out there to remedy. Thanks mayor Fuzzy Wuzzy
