Ballard SeafoodFest kicks off with benefit BBQ

This coming Friday the Ballard Chamber of Commerce will officially kickoff SeafoodFest with a benefit for the Seattle Fishermen’s Memorial.

From 6:30 to 10 p.m. at the Ballard Elks (6411 Seaview Ave NW), Smokin Pete’s Barbecue will be serving up some lip-smacking grub and Pyramid will be pouring the beer. Sourmash Stevedores will provide the music for the night.

The cost is $50 per ticket (purchase tickets here) which gets you all you can eat bbq and three drink tickets. The rest of the money goes to the Fishermen’s Memorial and the Ballard Chamber. For additional information email: bbq2010July9th@gmail.com or info@seattlefishermensmemorial.org.

  1. Oh look, another Ballard Chamber of Commerce to bike too… oh right, no Missing Link to get there safely. Shame on you, MyBallard to linking to these dirt bags.

  2. The Ballard Chamber is “evil?” For crying out loud, are so many of you so unidimensional that your disagreement with the Chamber on the trail negates all else? Really?

The Chamber has helped raise funds for local non-profits and other charitable groups for more than 70 years. But you’re right, go ahead and condemn the Chamber for this effort and criticize the Seattle Fisherman’s Memorial for working with them to raise badly needed funds for widows, widowers and the children who have lost parents. Bravo, I say.

  3. First of msballard let me be clear I am not against the efforts of the Fisherman’s memorial. The Ballard chamber WAS a good organization, in the PAST. They have done good things in the PAST. However the chamber has changed and NOW I want nothing to do with them nor any of their members. Currently I consider them an evil organization and I plan on not doing any business with any of their members. Organizations can change and I hope they do in the future.

  4. I recognize that you disagree with the Chamber regarding the bike trail and that’s perfectly fine. But your comments suggest that you may not be aware of what else the Chamber does in the community to support members as well as those businesses that are not members.

    – The Chamber produces the Ballard Business Directory that includes both members and non-members and promotes shopping and doing business locally.

    – The Chamber applied for and received numerous grants for sidewalk repairs, one of which resulted in the replacement of the entire sidewalk along stretches of Ballard Ave.

    – The Chamber has fought tirelessly with the City over the issue of parking to preserve the 140+ spaces on Shilshole and vehemently fought against pay stations on Ballard Avenue.

    – The Chamber continually lobbies the City for more police presence, for help with public inebriation, to obtain Park Rangers in Ballard, for funds for park activities, etc.

    – The Chamber is actively involved in numerous transit issues, including efforts to get bus service to Seaview Ave. and Golden Garden, sits on the advisory panel re the Route 44 bus and is currently fighting the bus stop removals in Ballard and the addition of curb bulbs, which in turn will require the removal of much-needed parking.

    – The Chamber lobbied and is now working with Seattle’s Office of Economic Development along with other neighborhood business districts to have community information about Ballard and Ballard’s Landmark District included on the Seatle Visitors Bureau website as well as widely distributed brochures.

    – The Chamber collaborated with City officials to bring the Farmer’s Market to Ballard. That event continues every Sunday as a major draw to the community.

    – The Chamber receives NO money from the City, State or Seafair to produce the Ballard SeafoodFest, a FREE event that brings tens of thousands of attendees to Ballard and Ballard businesses.

    – The Chamber hosted and producted a new Ballard Urban Picnic this year with NO financial support from the City or State, relying instead on sponsorships and its relationship with local entities.

    – The Chamber operates the Annual Sidewalk Sale and has been collaborating with local merchants to help promote the event and boost business activity in the community.

    – The Chamber has been running the Second Saturday Art Walk for more than 10 years, and was the force behind the creation of the Ballard Jazz Festival and Jazz Walk.

With all that it does, I find it interesting that the Chamber is so villified for its position on a single issue.

  5. You mean you can’t contribute to the cause without supporting the Ballard Chamber of Commerce? See, that’s classy… not buying into an organization’s using a charity as a smokescreen.

  6. The SeafoodFest is a great community event. Can’t wait to particpate in it once again this year to celebrate Ballard’s heritage and honor those fishermen who lost their lives.

  7. Great work by the Ballard Chamber of Commerce! Love the way they work hard to bring in business to the area and keep the community spirit alive.
