Osprey enjoys lunch atop power pole

MyBallard reader Ali sent us these photos of an Osprey sitting atop a power pole enjoying lunch in Ballard this weekend.

After hearing an unusual bird sound, Ali and her husband looked up to see the large bird around the intersection of NW 59th St and 20th Ave NW.

“We live about a mile from the water, so it was surprising to see it eating a fresh fish, “Ali writes, “He (or she, I’m not an ornithologist!) hung out there for quite some time, while the crows waited around for droppings.”

  1. FYI there have been a couple of Osprey nesting on top of the south side pylon at the Ballard Railway bridge this year. It is possible they reared some young but I could never see the inside of the nest.

  3. We saw one fledgling at the osprey nest a couple weeks ago. It was flapping and stretching its wings, but couldn’t quite fly. Then a parent bird came back with food and the fledgling was happy.
