Ballard Food Bank needs holiday donations

The holidays are a busy time for the Ballard Food Bank. Nancy McKinney, the executive director of the food bank sent us the following note:

The Ballard Food Bank is gearing up to serve 1,200 people the week of Thanksgiving! We need your help to fill our shelves with holiday food throughout the season – all items that would trim the table.

In October we served 4,148 individuals; 825 of which are 18 and younger. In addition we deliver food to 90 home bound seniors and disabled adults.

How can you help? Please donate shelf stable food such as canned food, boxed food, prepacked items. Donate fresh or frozen turkeys, produce and dairy the week of Thanksgiving and Christmas so we can be sure to give a turkey to every family that needs one. Donate hygiene items such as shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant. Donate money through our website, www.ballardfoodbank.org, or the mail.

Donation hours: Monday through Thursday from 8 am to 4 pm or Fridays please call ahead to arrange.

The Ballard Food Bank is very appreciative of our community: Ballard, Magnolia and Queen Anne. We are able to serve because of the support we get from our neighbors.

  1. Not having any donation hours on the weekends prevents me from donating anything fresh. I use the bins when i am at the grocery store, but i would like to donate fresh food as well. Please consider having a weekend day, the week before thanksgiving so that those of us with jobs can donate the requested fresh food items.

  2. What type of fresh food do you want to donate on the weekends? We only have two full time staff members so being available seven days a week is very difficult. Happy to discuss, please call 789-7800 and ask for Nancy.

  3. Flutex – long day at work led to poor reading comprehension! Great idea, I will be at the food bank from Noon to 3:00 pm on Sunday, November 21st. Donors – feel free to pull into our driveway and make donation on the south side of the building, Nancy

  4. FYI: QFC is having a great SALE on Turkeys through tomorrow (11/16). If you purchase $25 in groceries, the turkeys are $0.29/lb. That’s a 20lb turkey for less than $6 that you can donate to the food bank for Thanksgiving. PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD, Thanks!
