Fire response briefly interrupts Yulefest

Just after noon on Saturday, firefighters responded to a fire alarm at the Nordic Heritage Museum, where Yulefest is in full swing. Writes MyBallard reader Melissa:

I was there with some friends in the “Old Ballard” section of the museum when people started saying there was a small fire. Museum personnel asked us to move to the exits and we ended up leaving before learning any more!

Engine 18 and ladder 8 responded. We talked to the museum which said it was a “minor issue” with no damage. So for those who wondered about the event, the museum says Yulefest continues as scheduled this weekend.

  1. I thought this might be an emergency call for them running out of their “powdered” cider!

how lame! how much would it take to buy some real cider to sell?

I agree with the monkey above

  2. your heritage??

“powdered” cider is in your heritage? they don’t have apple trees?

that’s one heritage that should be allowed to die then. there’s people in norway right now rolling in their graves at this notion.

  3. Subsitute the words “Wing Luke Museum” for Nordic Heritage Museum, and “ID” for Ballard and people would be chasing “Monkey” and “Yep” down the street for heing racist. This is OUR Heritage, and the heritage of this neighborhood. If you don’t like it, why don’t you leave?

No one forced you to live here, did they?

The Museum is a historic building, and some of the artifacts are priceless. I’m just glad it was a non-event.

    Proud Swede/.Norwegian and Ballardite

  4. OUR heritage? WHAT?!

Not everyone who lives in Ballard is Nordic (THANK GOD).

And Nordic people do not have any special claim to the neighborhood (EVEN THOUGH THEY ACT LIKE IT).

What are you proud of exactly? A history of brutal violence and slaughtering the Natives who were here first? Seems to me it’s actually their neighborhood not yours…

  5. Pardon ME, but as the first Norwegian & Swedish immigrants got here in the 1860s, LONG after the rest of the “brutal slaugherting” etc… of the Native peoples.Say, a couple of hundred years.
If you ever went to the Nordic Heritage Museum, you might know that, ignoramus.

  6. Molly, reading comprehension is poor. I’m sure it will get better once you are out of middle school.

IF you said “I wish the (Nordic Heritage Museum, Wing Luke Museum, Black Heritge Museum) in (Ballard/International District/Central District) would burn down.” those are ALL racist statements.

Just because it IS the Nordic Heritage Museum doesn’t make the statement any LESS racist.

Poor poor “I Hate Ikea.” . Once you get to High School (Center School? Nova? Alternative School?) they teach a course in Washington State History. The Scandinavian immigrants weren’t around to “slaughter” etc. the Native Americans, any more than, say recent Vietnamese immigrants were.

I really would like to know who, exactly, put a gun to your head and forced you to attend Yulefest, anyway.

  7. who the hell are you talking to?

    who made a racist statement?

if I went to an ‘Asian’ festival and they were using powdered wasabi, I’d call their bluff too.

but now that you mention it–this event (and nordic culture?) is pretty lame. even my kids were disappointed with the so-called ‘crafts’

    got it now, jules?
