Cugini Cafe broken into, thief caught on tape

Early Wednesday morning, someone broke into Cugini Cafe (5306 Ballard Ave NW). Little did the suspect know, cameras were rolling. Owner Kylee Harris wants to know if you know the person in the surveillance video.

In the video you see a thief with a blond ponytail trying to stay low and out of sight. Harris tells us that the suspect got away with $20 in change. “I pretty much learned my lesson two years ago,” Harris tells us referring to an earlier break-in.

Harris says when her employee arrived at work on Wednesday she noticed the cash register till on the floor and the cupboards rifled through. Just a few weeks ago Harris told her employees to be aware of their surroundings. “This is the time of year that people do little crimes like this,” she tells us. In this instance the suspect broke a back window and came in through the back office. The person was in the store about five minutes.

There is now a sign in the window of Cugini Cafe that alerts potential thieves to the cameras and lets them know there is no money in the store.

  1. Lots of views of the thief’s face in the upper-right camera view, but the only close-ups are side shots at 0:52 and 1:10.

Why in the world someone would do all that belly-crawling and skulking and not bother to wear a mask, I can’t imagine.

  2. This is Seattle after all. Shouldn’t all businesses be mandated to have free bins? Wouldn’t government stepping in just a little bit more help us all? Just look at what some will do just to eat/survive. The blame is squarely on Bush. Shame on these evil greedy business owners. Gawd this hurt. How do you libs do it?

  3. Knowing Kylee, that guy’s face has been zeroxed and is now known by every business owner along Ballard Ave. You can bet his face is in her window right now. In fact, I’m heading there right now for my morning brew.

  4. I just noticed the thief is a black guy and I like the way phenomenal philosophy has been pouring out, with all theories as to why he did what he did. How i wish double standards were not applied to different thieves.A tief is a thief,u and I when we steal,we are thieves,

  5. Good thing it was caught on camera. It’s really a good thing that nowadays, technology is more advanced, and it becomes easier to identify thieves, and easier for the police to catch them. Hopefully in the future the cameras could prevent anything like this from happening at all.
