Ballard restaurant Staple & Fancy Mercantile has been named a semifinalist for a James Beard Award in the “Best New Restaurant” category.
Staple & Fancy Mercantile in the Kolstrand Building (4739 Ballard Ave NW)
The restaurant, which opened last August, is the brainchild of chef Ethan Stowell, who was also nominated for a James Beard Award as “Best Chef Northwest.”
The James Beard Foundation will cut the list to five finalists next month. Winners will be announced in May.

Great things happening in my old neighborhood besides the armed robberies.
It’s “All You Can Eat”, not “Eat All About It”. Great job Ethan. Super congrats to Jerry Traunfeld! He is amazing.
Yikes! Thank you.
I had been going to post that Nancy Leson’s “All You Can Eat” had featured this story this morning. But I decided against it, thinking “Eat All About It” was the blog by that other former food critic, who used to work for the PI. I avoid her stories where possible, so I wasn’t even going to open it to read it.
Looks tasty, but only if you’re a carnivore. My marriage is mixed, so we won’t be able to eat there.
