Updated 9 a.m.:

  • lakreitz posts this in the forum: It’s a little slick out there, so be careful if you need to drive. The Ballard Health Club opened right on time at 5:30. At 7:30, on my walk home up 24th the #17 and #75 buses passed by going north. Great Harvest (for french toast bread) Aster, Besalu, Walter’s and Picolino’s are all open. I saw a minor slide-into-curb-while-taking-a-left at 56th, but most other cars were moving along sanely.
  • The Woodland Park Zoo is closed today due to the snow. In a Tweet they say, “The animals are doing well–keeping warm and playing with the snow. Be safe out there!”
  • Updated 8:30 a.m. Silver sent us this photo of 15th Ave NW and NW 56th St. Snow covered side streets, but a well-trodden 15th Ave.

Updated 7:30 a.m. Light snow continues to fall in the neighborhood, and we now have 1″ of snow on our back deck. All Seattle Public Libraries will be open 1-5 p.m. today. (For more updates throughout the day, make sure you’re following the @myballard Twitter account.)

Updated 7 a.m. There will be no garbage, yard waste and recycling collection today due to dangerous road conditions, Seattle Public Utilities says. If today is your garbage day, put your cans out tomorrow by 7 a.m. If your garbage isn’t collected by the end of day tomorrow, put them back out on your next scheduled pickup day. Customers who were missed yesterday can put their cans out next week. You are allowed double the amount of garbage at no additional charge.

Earlier: Light snow has been falling in Ballard since early this morning. By 5 a.m. we had about a half an inch. According to Jim Guy of King5, the snow will continue to fall until mid-morning and taper off around lunch. He says we could get a few more inches. The flakes are tiny and the occasional wind gust blows the powder off rooftops.

The roads are white and not well traveled – as of 6 a.m., anyway. The only treated arterial that we saw early this morning was 15th Ave NW and cars appeared to be going the speed limit.

Both NW 65th and NW 80th Streets had not been treated by 6 a.m.

NW 80th Street. The car is heading eastbound.

We even saw a dedicated bicyclist ride past us on a white side street as we were walking the dog around 6 a.m. Very impressive.
