The local heron colony has returned to Commodore Park (near the fish ladder on the Magnolia side of the Ballard Locks) and Heron Habitat Helpers is hosting a free event for locals to learn more about these beautiful birds.
The event is set for this Saturday, April 4, from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.
Locals will have the chance to “meet” and observe the herons (using telescopes) as they watch over their 50 nests, protect their territory, incubate their eggs and fly in search of food.
March saw the Commodore Park heronry swing into action, with numbers growing steadily each day. Currently the heron population is large with the numbers of occupied nests grew from 17 in February to 56 as on March 28.

According to Heron Habitat Helpers, there are currently 33 incubating birds with a few young expected to hatch this week.
