Safety improvements coming to 3rd Ave NW and NW 56th St. intersection

Screen Shot 2015-06-14 at 4.39.52 PMCrews will be out doing construction at the intersection of 3rd Ave NW and NW 56th Street today, a safety improvement project that will take up to two months to complete. The Seattle Department of Transportation tells us that drivers should expect two temporary closures of NW 56th St and NW 55th Place at 3rd Ave NW during the construction, but that local access will be maintained throughout the work. Crews will be working from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays for the next seven to nine weeks.

SDOT says the east side of the NW 56th St. and 3rd Ave NW intersection will be closed to traffic starting today, and will be closed 24 hours a day for up to three weeks. After the east side is complete, crews will close the west side of the intersection. SDOT says pedestrian and bike traffic will be routed around the closures.

The safety improvements include:

  • An all-way stop at the intersection of 3rd Ave NW and NW 56th St. to improve pedestrian crossing safety.
  • Change NW 55th Place to become one-way southwest-bound
  • Add curb extensions on 3rd Ave NW to shorten the length of pedestrian crossings and improve visibility between pedestrians and motorists
  • Upgrade curb ramps to be compliant with current Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards

SDOT says the project is funded by the Safe Routes to School Program and the Bridging the Gap transportation levy through the Neighborhood Street Fund Program.

If you have questions or concerns during construction, contact the project team at NSF@seattle.gov or 206-615-0925. Visit the project website to learn more.
