Summer sailing camps at Golden Gardens

Corinthian-8571Registration is still open for kids sailing camps at Golden Gardens, organized by the Corinthian Yacht Club (CYC), located at 7755 Seaview Ave NW. The camps are offered for nine weeks this summer, with the first one starting at the end of June.

The CYC opens their camps up to all, meaning you don’t have to be a member to participate. The camps are taught on Optimist sailboats (Optis), and are for children ages 8 to 13. Each camp runs five days, and will teach each student how to sail unassisted in a small dinghy. Water safety, boat nomenclature, steering, basic maneuvers, and capsize recovery will also be taught.  Returning students will learn intermediate topics designed to advance a young sailor’s independence and ability, according to CYC.

The club also offers a Guppies program, which is for 4- to 7-year-olds every Wednesday in July and August from 5 to 7 p.m. The kids will have an opportunity to float around in a small sailboat to get comfortable being on the water. “It’s great exposure for kids in a non-intimidating environment,” Celeste Benson from CYC writes.
