Ballard’s getting some national fame with TripAdvisor naming it one of the country’s hippest neighborhoods.
The well-known travel website made a list of the “14 Coolest Hipster Neighborhoods in the USA”, mentioning Ballard alongside Portland’s Pearl District and Boise’s North End. According to TripAdvisor, the determining factors for hipness include the number of microbreweries, independent coffee shops, and upscale farmer’s markets (check, check, and check).
In their blurb about Ballard, TripAdvisor mentions the “well-placed” Nordic Heritage Museum, handcrafted cocktails “beneath dusty chandeliers and velvet curtains” at Hazlewood, and the Old Ballard Brewery Tour, which includes Lagunitas, NW Peaks, and Peddlers.
Other neighborhoods on the list include Wynwood in Miami, East Nashville, Rino in Denver, Montrose in Houston, Lawrenceville in Pittsburgh, Fishtown in Philadelphia, East Austin, North Loop in Minneapolis, North Park in San Diego, and Marigny in New Orleans.

The boomers are now in their 70’s…millenials won’t truly be able to be judged on their long-term merits until we have enough data to look back and see how they did over the course of many decades, not just the last decade and a half-ish.
Talking about straight across comparisons: what percentage of previous generations were in prison by age 25 compared to others. How many people born in the 80s had 4 year degrees by age 30? How many born in the 70s? 60s? How many sexual partners did a boomer have by age 20 vs other generations?
A massive wave of social problems with alcohol, drugs, petty crime, sex, family, and more hit the country with the baby boomers and it persisted until the teenagers of the 90s came along. It was during the 90s that the crime rate plummeted, and it was among those under 20 that the decline in abortion was first noted.
A far greater number of people born in the 40s and 50s had totally screwed up their lives by age 30. Those born in the 80s and later have avoided most of that and returned to 1950s levels of social problems. They deserve credit for making good choices, not abuse.
Did I mention the childhood obesity epidemic reversed in the 90s? Add it up and a pattern starts to emerge.
