In mid-November, Ballard Commons Park will be home to a 1957 Shasta camper-turned-mobile-office where creatives can seek business advice for their ventures.
It’s called the Mobile Incubator, dreamed up by the Culture Hustlers, described as a “movement of artists, performers, writers and designers on a journey from side hustler to entrepreneur,” they write in their Facebook bio. “We’re mapping the entire US culture sector, mile by mile, sharing our stories and advice through podcasts, docu-shorts, field reporting & pop-ups. Mobile Incubator is a passionate squad of rolling broadcast studios. Installing as public art, a Mobile Incubator gathers questions through pop-ups and conversations with open office hours with free business advice.”
A man named Lucas Spivey, an “MFA/MBA hybrid”, is at the helm of the incubator, which has traveled through 42 states and 25,000 miles around the country since its initial departure from Seattle. The incubator will be stationed in various parks around the city for the month of November, and will be posted at Ballard Commons from November 16 to 18, 11am to 3pm each day.
“My goal is to teach business principles to artists, but I encourage everyone to interact on their terms because I feel that people learn best when they’re comfortable and excited,” Spivey said.
If you can’t make it to the Ballard Commons pop-up, the incubator will be at the following locations throughout November:
- Nov. 5 – 7: John C. Little, Sr. Park (6961 37th Ave. S), 3-7 p.m.
- Nov. 9 -11: Flo Ware Park (2800 S Jackson St), 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
- Nov. 12 – 14: First Hill Park (1201 University St.), 3-7 p.m.
- Nov. 19 – 21: Lake City Mini Park (12359 Lake City Way NE), 3-7 p.m.
The pop-up incubator series is funded by Seattle’s Arts in Parks program.
