24th and Market St detours start today

Work to repave parts of Market St will create new headaches this week, with crews shifting their work to 24th Ave NW.

Starting today, northbound (left) turns from NW Market St onto 24th Ave NW will not be allowed, and the west crosswalk at 24th Ave NW and Market St will be closed.

SDOT says the closures will allow crews to start conduit work on the west side of the intersection.

On the upside, crews have completed the roadway, trench, sidewalk and curb work on the north half of 28th and Market, meaning that intersection has now fully reopened.

The work on pole foundations between 28th and 24th will continue through next week as crews make their way west towards NW 54th St.

King County will install temporary trolley poles east of the 24th/Market intersection — the temporary poles will allow crews to intercept existing trolley wires and replace the poles that support them along the full length of the project.

As early as next week (September 3rd), the north half of the 24th/Market intersection will be completely closed as crews demo and prep for paving work. More details to come on their schedule and the detours to follow.

  1. The only “headache” here is how long it took this project to get started, and how long it’s going to take to improve the rest of Market St.

For example, why do the curb cuts for wheelchairs and strollers not line up with the painted crosswalks on almost all the intersections on Market St.? When is that going to get fixed?

    1. The curb cuts likely met whatever accessible guidelines that existed when they were constructed. Upgrading them to current standards is (1) expensive and (2) not required unless part of a larger project.

Now that Market Street is getting reconstructed, the ramps and crossings will get upgraded to current standards and guidelines.

  2. Too many chiefs, and too many braves. Just sit back and trust the city, they really do know what’s best for all of us, right?
