Ballard’s very own Oktoberfest is coming back for its fifth year, with four local breweries joining forces to celebrate on Sept. 14th.
The participating breweries will be Lucky Envelope, Populuxe, Reuben’s and Stoup, with a brewery crawl and traveling oompah band throughout the day.
“Dust off your lederhosen and get ready to put a little oompah in your day,” Amy Besunder from Populuxe writes.
The day will kick off with the Oompah Machine band at Reuben’s Taproom (5010 14th Avenue NW) at 1pm. They’ll then march to Stoup at 2pm, Lucky Envelope at 3pm, and Populuxe at 4pm. Each brewery will serve one special Oktoberfest brew and limited edition half-liter commemorative stein or boot. They’ll be selling glassware for $6 empty, or $10 filled.
Here are some of the seasonal brews from each brewery:
- Reuben’s Brews: Festbier, Betonbier, Pilsner, and Gose.
- Stoup Brewing: German Pilsner, Marzen, Bavarian Hefeweizen, and Dunkelweizen
- Lucky Envelope Brewing: NW Harvest Pilsner
- Populuxe Brewing: Marzen, German Pils and Gose

Isn’t that Septemberfest?
It only seems that way. When this celebration started way back in the day, Germany existed inside a time-bubble that kept the country permanently 3 weeks into the future of the rest of the world. So, it was Oktoberfest, but to us it seemed to be happening in September.
When the Germanic people’s were freed of the time-lock, they found themselves 3 weeks ahead of the rest of the world. They had to adjust their calendar to the rest of the world’s, but kept this particular celebration around the same time-frame…just now, it seemed to be 3 weeks early. It’s also an inside joke among the German people, who, until now, were the only ones who knew why Oktoberfest occurred in September.
Some inside jokes in Germany are less funny than others.

I went to Munich late one September, went to Oktoberfest and it was fantastic, then flew to NY and on to SF and then Honolulu and they were having Oktoberfest in Hawaii!
I was married to a Pan Am stewardess at the time. :) Fun days!
OK
I’m quite pleased to see two brewers have made a Marzen. And Ballard By Boat, thanks for the explanation!
Cool, just in time for the extra DUI patrols. Haven’t had a drink in over 17 years now, will be missing this, again!
Paintking – why post here? you are obviously still interested in beer.
yahoo, just what ballard needs more drunks
I don’t expect my server to be flatter than my beer. Just saying.
Nice. Body shaming Oktoberfest waitresses doesn’t sound like a strategy that’s going to win you many friends.
Hey, I like big t*ts with my beer. That’s not body-shaming, that’s body-complimenting.
