Ship Canal Water Quality Project update at March Ballard District Council meeting

Next week is the monthly Ballard District Council meeting, which will focus on the Ship Canal Water Quality Project.

The meeting will be Wed., March 11 from 7pm to 8:30pm, and will feature Kelsey Hinsberger from the Seattle Public Utilities team, who will explain the context of the multi-year project to build a new stormwater tunnel between Wallingford and Ballard along the Ship Canal.

“This critical project at $600 million, is the largest capital facility that SPU has ever undertaken,” the BDC meeting info reads.

The project is well underway, with the base of 24th Ave NW at the epicenter of activity. Next week’s meeting will help explain the following:

  • The context of this critical environmental redress for sanitary and stormwater sewer combined overflows into the Lake Union Ship Canal;
  • An overview of the facility, its staging and main components and what to expect in downtown Ballard, including detailed plans regarding: planned 65-foot tall pump station tower and tunnel shaft design, revamped 24th Ave Pier (opening 2024), the Yankee Diner building and future of the site, new public art by Christian French, and adjacent pedestrian and street improvements.

The meeting will be held at the Sunset Hill Community Club (3003 NW 66t Street). All are welcome.

  1. I simply can’t wait for the new artwork. Spending my hard earned $$ on this makes me feel so good about the direction we’re taking. I can’t begin to think how I’d get by each day without this art. What is it now; 1% of our money at ANY public project is mandated? Who thinks this S up?
