First look at 7-story apartment planned for 20th and 57th

Plans are in the works to build a 7-story apartment on the corner of 20th Ave NW and NW 57th St.

The updated application is for an 80-unit apartment with 44 parking spots. Two houses on NW 57th St and a building that contains a law firm and the Consulate General of Iceland would be torn down for the development.

The architects are GGLO Design, who have drawn up the mock-ups for the new apartment complex. (You can review their full design packet via Seattle in Progress.)

The application is currently under review; if you want to file written comments you can send mail to Department of Construction & Inspections, 700 Fifth Ave., Suite 2000, P.O. Box 34019, Seattle, WA 98124-4019 or email PRC@seattle.gov.

According to the CEO of Redfin, people are now looking to move out of major cities. Leases are not being renewed and search patterns are concentrated on suburbs and more rural areas that are not reliant on mass transit. The immediate trend is away from urban density. Developers need to consider housing with adequate parking or they may have a tough time leasing their units. It’s too early to say if this trend holds but working from home and parents wanting to home school is going to upend the market, especially commercial real estate.

Besides, that area is becoming very dark even on a sunny day. Buildings are too tall and close together.

Yep. Density is going to be a dirty word. Who wants to be stuck in a rabbit hutch during a pandemic?
