63-year-old man died from hypothermia in a vehicle next to Ballard Library during cold weather

The King County Medical Examiner reported five deaths from hypothermia in the past week following the extremely low temperatures, including one man who was found in his vehicle just outside the Ballard Library.

The Seattle Times reports that one of the deceased was Jay Matthew Anderson, 63, who was parked outside the Ballard Library. It’s unclear whether Anderson was experiencing homelessness according to authorities.

The other deaths were Adam Quinn Elknation, 37, who died outside on Seneca Street; William Buen Macabitas, 67, who died outside near a housing complex on Rainier Avenue South; and Mehri Berhe Tesfa (67) and David N. Tinker (53), both found inside residences.

The Times reported that weather shelters quickly filled on Friday last week, despite there being 300 total spaces for people experiencing homelessness.
