Commuting to UPrep in Wedgwood is easy, safe with custom bus

Ballard resident Orrin S. loves to play on the varsity ultimate frisbee team for UPrep, a 612 private school in Wedgwood, where he is a sophomore. He initially worried that getting to and from school would be a challenge, but then he learned about UPrep’s Custom Metro bus.

Every morning and on the afternoons when Orrin doesn’t have Ultimate practice, he rides a special student-only bus. The Custom Metro Bus, a partnership created by Metro with UPrep and two other schools, offers students six specially designed bus routes throughout the greater Seattle area. The Custom Metro Bus runs on the same schedule as UPrep’s school calendar.

“I am usually able to get a seat. I always bring my mp3 player and earphones and occasionally a book. You can do homework on the bus, but you will also have time when you get to UPrep, since the bus arrives on campus about 40 minutes before class starts,” Orrin says.

On the days when Orrin has ultimate frisbee practice after school, he jumps on UPrep’s free activity bus and his mom is able to pick him up from the Greenwood Library. He gets home 45 minutes earlier than he would if he took the public Metro bus.

“I would definitely recommend the Custom Metro Bus. It is a safe, reliable type of transportation to and from school and it is very eco-friendly—compared to my parents driving me or carpooling. For younger students, riding the Custom Metro Bus can help nurture their independence,” says Orrin. “Think of it as a school bus, because that’s what it is.”

UPrep enrolls nearly 30 students from the Ballard community. We invite your family to learn more at our upcoming open houses in October and November.
