The project to renovate Salmon Bay Park’s (2001 NW Canoe Pl) playground broke ground last week.
Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) started construction on Sept. 3, closing Salmon Bay Park’s playground while they conduct a full makeover of the play area.
The renovation project is years in the making. SPR started discussions for the renovation in September 2020. They put several designs to the community at an open house and then surveyed the public with three options for the new playground.
The winning design is called the Woodland Explorer. The playground will include new features for kids ages 2-5 and another set of structures for 5-12s, with multiple slides, a large net climber, multiple balance and climbing elements, nature-themed play panels, lop hops, swings, and a “climbable whirl.” They’ll keep the zip line in place.
SPR says there will also be accessibility improvements for getting to and from the play area along with new seating areas. All the new play equipment and surfacing will meet the current accessibility and safety standards for public playgrounds. SDOT will be installing additional bike parking to serve the play area.
SPR says they expect to open the new play area in early 2025.
