8oz. Burger closing after 10 years in Ballard

Update Nov. 6: 8oz. Burger owner Kevin Chung shared the following comments with My Ballard:

“We’ve always had to manage occasional break ins over the years, which is unfortunately a part of doing business in any city. However, this year took a drastic turn, escalating from monthly to weekly and eventually to nearly daily occurrences. We tried everything in our power to keep the business going, repairing doors and windows, boarding up break-in entry points with our landlord’s support, and managing the financial losses from stolen equipment and alcohol. But the tipping point came when, one night the entire electrical wiring and panels were stolen from the building, which repair costs far beyond our financial means as it involved the entire building and not just our unit. 

At that point, combined with redevelopment plans with the landlord and no assurances that the situation wouldn’t continue, we made the difficult decision to close 8oz Burger & Co. in Ballard.

It breaks our hearts to have to close our business overnight in the wonderful Ballard neighborhood we’ve been a part of for ten years.

We are deeply saddened but we remain hopeful that one day we will be back in Ballard! In the meantime, we’ve rented a small kitchen space for takeout orders and will continue searching for a new location to reopen our doors.”

Original Oct. 30: The local burger joint 8oz. Burger & Co. (2409 NW Market St) has announced they’ve closed their Ballard location.

The owners posted a note on the door (see below) that said repeated break-ins and electrical wiring and equipment theft “to an irreparable financial extent” are causing them to close. They also closed their Capitol Hill location in January.

8oz. Burger & Co opened in Ballard in 2014.

8oz. is looking for a new location, but in the meantime, they’ll transition to take-out and delivery only.

“We deeply appreciate your continued support and look forward to serving you again soon!” they wrote.

8oz.’s Ballard location is slated for redevelopment, along with several other storefronts on the southwest corner of 24th Ave NW and NW Market St, where an 8-story apartment building with 188 units is in the works.
