Spirit Gas Station and service center in Ballard closes after 38 years

The local gas station Spirit at 24th Ave NW and NW Market St has appeared to have closed its doors after operating for 38 years in Ballard.

The usually packed parking lot is now empty, and a sign in the window says “Thank you for 38 years.”

My Ballard attempted to call to learn more, but the phone has been disconnected.

Owner Harold Hezel is a longtime Ballardite—he graduated from Ballard High in 1976. Along with running the gas station, he serviced vehicles. According to a former customer Tom Robbins, Hezel stopped taking new customers last year in preparation for his retirement.

There’s been a flurry of apartment development around Spirit—we’re looking into what’s coming next for the corner lot.
