Reminder: Ballard Bridge closing this weekend, May 9-12

As part of the ongoing paving project, the Ballard Bridge will be closed to vehicle traffic this weekend.

This work is part of the 15th Ave W/NW & Ballard Bridge Paving & Safety Project, which was delayed last fall due to rain. The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) says the full closures are necessary to allow crews to work safely and efficiently on the Ballard Bridge and the nearby Leary Way Bridge.

Here’s some info from SDOT for getting around this weekend:

Pedestrians and cyclists
The sidewalks on the Ballard Bridge will remain open during the closures. For safety, people biking may be asked to walk their bikes or switch to the other side of the bridge.

Drivers and freight
Drivers should plan to use the Aurora Bridge (SR 99) as the primary detour route. The Fremont Bridge should only be used if you are traveling directly to Fremont or Westlake, as it has limited capacity. Detour signs will be posted, but drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and reroute before reaching the Ballard Bridge.

Bus riders
Bus routes that usually cross the Ballard Bridge may be detoured to the Fremont Bridge. Riders should expect longer travel times and possible temporary relocations of nearby bus stops. King County Metro will post service alerts and updates.

Boaters
Boat travel under the Ballard Bridge will remain open, but boaters are asked to proceed carefully around the work areas.

Upcoming closure dates

  • May 30–June 2
  • June 6–9
Backup dates: June 13–16 and July 18–21, if needed.
Each closure will last from Friday evening through Monday morning.

These dates are weather-dependent, and updates will be provided mid-week and confirmed on Fridays before each closure.
