After 17 years in the heart of Ballard, the iconic art and gift store Monster is up for sale—and if no buyer steps forward by the end of June, the shop will begin winding down operations.
Owners Rosalie and Doug Gale shared the news in a heartfelt Instagram post this week, saying they’re accepting offers through June 30. Without a sale, the couple plans to gradually close the shop by the end of the year.
“In case you or anyone you know has been mulling over whether you want to buy a really wonderful staple of the Ballard & Seattle community, NOW is your chance,” the Gales wrote.
Monster opened in 2008 at Ballard Ave and 20th. The Gales purchased Monster in 2017 and moved the shop to 1716 NW Market St in Feb. 2020.
Monster has been more than a retail store—it’s served as a vibrant community hub for local makers, crafters, and artists. The shop regularly hosts craft classes and art shows, building a loyal following over nearly two decades.
“If community building, crafting, business stuff, and teaching is your thing,” the post reads, “THIS beloved business…could be your thing, too.”
