Ballard Bridge malfunctions cause delays for drivers on Sunday

The Ballard Bridge was malfunctioning for about an hour on Sunday afternoon, causing significant backups for drivers.

SDOT shared that they were experiencing mechanical issues, which kept the bridge in the raised position.

SDOT says the bridge had been raised for vessel traffic and couldn’t be lowered because one of the parts that helps align the bridge was rubbing against its guide. When this happens, the bridge can’t seat properly, and crews need to make adjustments before traffic can safely resume.

During the closure, vehicles on the north end of the bridge were rerouted down Leary Way NW.
