Temporary water discoloration possible in parts of Ballard

Some Ballard residents may notice temporary discoloration in their tap water over the next few days as Seattle Public Utilities adjusts water operations, according to a notice from SPU.

The changes may affect drinking water in certain neighborhoods shown in orange on the map below. Officials say the water remains safe to use, and any discoloration should clear on its own within one to three days.

SPU advises residents who see discolored water to wait until it clears before drinking or preparing food. Running cold water for a few minutes may help the water clear more quickly.

The discoloration can occur when adjustments to how water moves through the system stir up sediment in pipes. SPU says these operational changes are being made to help manage the region’s water supply.

Residents whose water does not clear after a few days, or who have concerns, can contact SPU’s 24/7 Operations Response Center at (206) 386-1800. More information about discolored water and why it sometimes occurs is available on SPU’s website.
