Route 40 project update: Sidewalk, bus stop upgrades to Leary Way

Construction is continuing along NW Leary Way in Ballard as part of the Route 40 Transit-Plus Multimodal Corridor Project, with crews advancing utility work, sidewalk construction, and bus stop improvements near 15th Ave NW.

According to the latest project update, work is underway on both sides of NW Leary Way west and east of 15th Ave NW.

On westbound NW Leary Way, west of 15th Ave NW, crews have completed trenching and installed electrical conduit for new bus stop features. New curbs for the sidewalk are in place, and the concrete foundation has been poured for an upgraded traffic signal at the northwest corner. Next week, crews are scheduled to backfill trenches, grade the area, install formwork, pour concrete for bus stop features, and begin pouring the new sidewalk.

On eastbound NW Leary Way, east of 15th Ave NW, crews have completed trenching and electrical conduit installation for bus stop features. Grading and concrete formwork for new roadway paving and bus stop foundations are also complete. Next week, crews are expected to pour concrete for the bus stop foundations, roadway panels, and curb.

The work in Ballard is part of broader improvements along the Route 40 corridor, which also include construction activity in Fremont.

In Fremont, crews are completing curb installation and underground electrical work for new bus stops and upgraded traffic signals. Along Fremont Place North and North 35th Street, workers are forming and pouring new sidewalks, curb ramps, and bus stop foundations, with additional concrete work planned next week, weather permitting.

Additional work is underway near the Lenin Statue on Fremont Place North, where new curbs and underground electrical conduits have been completed. Crews are forming foundations and grading for new sidewalks, with concrete pours expected to begin next week.

At the northwest and northeast corners of Fremont Ave North, Fremont Place North, and North 35th Street, trenching and electrical conduit installation for upgraded signals has been completed. Crews are now pouring concrete for new curb ramps and sidewalks.

Construction is also continuing along North 35th Street and Fremont Place North east of Fremont Ave North, where crews have begun pouring curbs, sidewalks, and curb ramps. On eastbound North 35th Street west of Fremont Ave North, electrical components for bus stop features have been installed, and sidewalk work has begun.

During construction, crews will demolish existing sidewalks and install new, wider sidewalks and ADA-compliant curb ramps. Work involves trenching for underground electrical conduit and concrete paving along key blocks of Fremont Ave North, North 36th Street, North 35th Street, and nearby intersections.

Sidewalk closures and pedestrian detours will be in place, and some driveways and business access points may be temporarily impacted. Noise, dust, and construction equipment will be present during work hours.

Project officials say the improvements are intended to create safer, more accessible pedestrian connections, support upgraded lighting and traffic signals, and improve reliability and comfort along Route 40, one of Metro’s busiest bus routes.
