The 98th annual Blessing of the Fleet will take place next month at Fishermen’s Terminal, continuing a longstanding tradition honoring the region’s fishing community and the risks they take at sea.
The tradition began nearly a century ago with the late Pastor O.L. Haavik of Ballard First Lutheran Church. This year’s service will be led by Pastor Elise Scott of Ballard First Lutheran Church.

According to event organizers, the service offers thanks for those working in the fishing industry, acknowledges the dangers they face while providing food, and includes prayers for their safety and for their families during periods of separation. The service will also remember those who have been lost at sea.
The annual observance coincides with the spring departure of the commercial fishing fleet as vessels head to Pacific and Alaska waters.
Organizers say representatives from local government and the fishing industry have been invited to offer remarks during the event.
The public is invited to attend the service, which will take place at Fishermen’s Terminal on April 12 from 2 to 4 p.m. Coffee and cookies will be served following the event.
